Early indications are that Birds of Prey is significantly underperforming at the box office. Not surprised, given the marketing campaign.

This is why the marketing campaign matters. I'm not a pre-existing fan of this character, so the marketing had to make me want to see it. My impression of the trailer was extremely negative. I don't really see why I should go pay money to see it in the theater when I think it looks terrible. It might be good. But they haven't sold me on it.

I think this is the first DCEU movie that I haven’t seen opening weekend and will probably miss in theaters. I believe you guys that it’s better than its trailers but with so many content options available all the time, there’s nothing about this movie that screams at me as being essential to see in theaters opening weekend.

Great holds on this Oscar weekend especially 1917 with only a 5.2% drop and closing in on $300 million worldwide with much more to come after its anticipated Oscar wins tonight.

Jumanji and Knives Out holding strong too.

I'm not interested in Sonic, but good for Paramount that they have a hit. Their highest grosser of all of last year was Rocketman, which topped out under $100 million domestic, and obviously they had some pricey flops recently, like Gemani Man and Dark Fate. So they badly needed this to work and it's good that it is.

Also notable with this weekend's grosses that Frozen II has hit $475 million domestically. That will be its final major milestone, since the Blu-ray arrives next week. But, what a run it has had. It is #4 domestic for 2019 behind Endgame, The Lion King, and The Rise of Skywalker, and in most other years that gross would be enough to be #1. It is #17 all-time domestic just behind Finding Dory. Worldwide, it charted even higher at #3 for 2019, behind only Endgame and Lion King, with $1.4 billion. Of course, this success was pretty easy to see coming because the first one is such a beloved title, but still. I really loved the sequel for doing something new and different with the characters and am glad it has been responded to as well as it has.

Jumanji: The Next Level also passed $300 million domestic over the past couple of days. Still a drop from the last film, but another huge hit nonetheless. Worldwide is nearly $800 million.

And Jumanji has been incredibly leggy, holding on longer and better than Star Wars even though it came out first.

I think it's still clear that Paramount thinks that was money well spent. If they thought the movie would sell with the original design after the reaction to the trailer, they wouldn't have spent the money to redo it. Now, the movie is doing very well
