That can't have helped but how many 'Liam Neeson kills a bunch of dudes' movies does the audience need?

At least "CP" offers a twist on that genre - it's not as straightforward a "Liam kills people" movie as the others.

Really, it's closer to "Fargo" than to "Taken"...

I'm still happy it's a departure from that routine for Neeson...

Sure, but if it is, that's a marketing failure, since it was on the marketing to explain to audiences why this one is different and worth going to see. How are we supposed to know it's not Taken 47 if the trailer doesn't show us what makes it new?

I remember liking the first Taken very much when I saw it in theaters, but I never saw it again and haven't bothered with any of its derivatives. I tend to like Nesson more when he's making films that don't fit into this mold, like Silence and A Monster Calls.

"CP" was gonna be a tough sell if it portrayed the movie more honestly because it doesn't fit into easy boxes.

It definitely has the "Neeson goes on vengeful killing spree" side - the first act makes you think it'll be "Taken 47" - but then it veers into more Coen-esque areas.

They decided it'd be easier to sell as "Taken in the Snow" and went that way. It didn't seem to work since the movie's not done great business, but I'm not sure there was another marketing approach that would've fared better...

And there’s also no way to know if the approach would have been successful were it not for Neeson’s press tour.

Absolutely true. However, I think we might be able to infer some things based on how his next few films perform.

If his next film in a leading role after this one also flops, then the likelihood that people were turned off by his comments increases. If his next film is a hit, then it becomes more likely that people just didn't want to see Cold Pursuit in particular. I think he's got a few different projects that are done but awaiting release. It will be interesting to see the trajectory of his career from here.

He's definitely in Men in Black coming out this summer, although he's not a lead there -- I would expect a small role comparable to Rip Torn's Zed in the original trilogy. So how much of an issue his presence there is is an open question. I'm not sure when his next film in a leading role is supposed to open.

Iirc M. Night paid for this movie himself? If so, then he's in line for a very large check....I felt mixed about the movie myself.

Yeah, but Replicas was long-delayed and gave off the stench of being something they open in January because it's not good enough to open anywhere else. Reeves has John Wick 3 coming up, and he's also in Toy Story 4. He's going to be fine.

Yup. $20 million of his own money. Paid off big time.

I was mixed on the film too. Split was by far the best film in the trilogy.

Inexpensive movie, but even so it might not break even.
