NBC will broadcast the Winter Olympics in 4K HDR with Dolby Atmos audio across the USA to Comcast X1 set top box subscribers with 4K HDR capable TVs.

Yep. Less great for everyone else.

I wonder if other shows will be getting UHD Atmos distribution over cable? And will Verizon or Dish get in the game? That would be interesting. And might change people’s calculus on upgrading.

From what I was told by my old TV Broadcast buddies the UHD/HDR is a NBC/Comcast exclusive. Not sure this is correct, but they also tell me Comcast's X1 STB is Dolby Vision capable over the HDMI output and the broadcast includes the DV sub carrier.

Currently the only X1 box that can do 4K HDR is the DVR XG1v4. I have not read anywhere about that box having the ability to do Dolby Vision. For live streaming from the Olympics I would suspect NBC would employ the HLG form of HDR.

I just tried saying "4K Olympics" and Xfinity had two 4K HDR previews (about 15 minutes total) which looked and sounded quite good. The main events start tomorrow in 4K and HDR
