2011 INTERNATIONAL CES ANNOUNCES NEW TELECOM PAVILION

Global Telecom Buyers Meet Next Generation Broadband Infrastructure Solutions at 2011 CES

Arlington, Va., April 13, 2010 – The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® today announced the official launch of the Telecom Pavilion at the 2011 International CES® , the world’s largest consumer technology tradeshow. The Telecom Pavilion will feature a dedicated exhibition area in the Las Vegas Convention Center for manufacturers of advanced broadband equipment and related products and services. The 2011 International CES is scheduled to run January 6-9, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"We are thrilled to create this new exhibit area focused on broadband equipment and services, a phenomenal growth area in the technology industry,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CEA. “The CES Telecom Pavilion will fill the void left by the close of SUPERCOMM and unite the world’s top telecom service providers with manufacturers showcasing next-generation broadband solutions."

The Telecom Pavilion at CES is designed to bring traditional and emerging communications companies together to leverage the rapid convergence of advanced core network and broadband equipment, services, content and applications. The newly floored CES exhibit space will feature the latest in 3G/4G, broadband, content, copper and fiber-based networks, FMC (Fixed-Mobile Convergence), IPTV, IMS, triple play, quad play, security, VOIP and more.

The 2010 CES attracted all of the top 50 global telecommunications service providers and featured 2,500 technology exhibitors, including a record 330 first time exhibitors. The Telecom Pavilion space for the 2011 International CES has been officially floored and the wait/priority list is now open. Companies interested in exhibiting at the 2011 Telecom Pavilion at CES should contact Tira Gordon, Senior Account Manager for CES, at [email protected].

The 2010 CES is over just 90 days ago or so and already CEA is putting out news releases on 2011! I'm still looking through materials I picked up at the show in January and I'm thoroughly enjoying my new Panasonic Steam Iron that I saw exhibited at the Panasonic Booth. Yes, I'm wrinkle-free in 3-D!

2011 INTERNATIONAL CES ANNOUNCES NEW CONNECTED HOME APPLIANCES TECHZONE

AHAM and CES Join Forces to Showcase Smart Appliances

Arlington, Va., May 5, 2010 – The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® today announced the launch of the Connected Home Appliances TechZone at the 2011 International CES®, the world’s largest consumer technology tradeshow. The Connected Home Appliances TechZone, co-sponsored by CEA, the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) and The Retail Observer magazine, will feature 10,000 square feet of exhibit space in the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center for manufacturers of next-generation appliances. The 2011 International CES will be held January 6-9, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"The Connected Home Appliances TechZone is a natural extension of the CES show floor, with products designed to network and connect, improving the lives of consumers throughout the home," said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CEA. "We are creating this new area in response to strong demand from current and future CES exhibitors. Consumers want the ability to connect all aspects of their home, and with this desire comes the opportunity for CES exhibitors to showcase connected home appliances that will make consumers’ lives easier and more energy efficient."

AHAM President Joseph McGuire agreed, stating: "The home is an essential component to an effective smart grid. Smart appliances and consumer electronics will allow consumers to save money on their electric bill and use energy in a more environmentally friendly manner. Already a leader in energy efficiency and the smart grid, the appliance industry is paving the way with smart technologies for demand-response capable appliances. In addition to smart grid enabled appliances, the pavilion will showcase other products and technologies that will appeal to savvy consumers. The world’s leading technology trade show is the ideal venue for AHAM members and other appliance manufacturers to showcase these technologies and the connected home concept."

The Connected Home Appliances TechZone is designed to benefit manufacturers, retailers, wholesalers, home builders, integrators, suppliers, utilities and all others in the connected appliances arena. The Connected Home Appliances TechZone will feature household appliances (both major and portable) and innovative technologies that integrate with other electronics products to improve consumers’ health and productivity while reducing their environmental impact.

"The new Connected Home Appliance TechZone at CES is going to be an exhilarating addition for those in the appliance industry. Combining home integration with new innovations in appliance technology in a consumer electronics environment will set a new trend here in the U.S.," said Eliana Barriga, publisher, The Retail Observer. "CES is an exciting venue for appliance manufacturers to form new relationships with the consumer electronics world and gain exposure to the market’s leading players within the industry. It will be a great show to bring both worlds together."

The 2010 CES featured 2,500 technology exhibitors, including a record 330 first time exhibitors. Space for the new Connected Home Appliances TechZone for the 2011 International CES has been officially floored and the wait/priority list is now open.

Got this today from CEA. Another new Techzone for 2011. There's always there's more to CES than 3D HDTV.

2011 International CES Launches New Mobile Apps Showdown

Winners of Most Innovative Mobile App To Be Announced at the 2011 CES in January

Arlington, VA July 7, 2010 The International CES, the worlds largest consumer technology tradeshow, today announced the launch of a new Mobile Apps Showdown at the 2011 CES. Nominations for the competition are now open, and mobile application developers can submit entries to be judged by a panel of tech experts. Final round judging will take place live at the 2011 International CES, held January 6-9, 2011, in Las Vegas. The winner will be announced on January 8, 2011.

There are more than 185,000 mobile apps available that can help us do everything from finding restaurants to finding your parked car in a crowded shopping mall, said Robin Raskin, founder and President of Living in Digital Times, LLC. This exciting competition will give mobile app developers access to the world's largest technology platform, the International CES.

With Apple claiming over four billion app downloads, and with thousands of new applications available from Android, Blackberry, Nokia, and Palm's Web OS, the mobile app marketplace is expanding at a rapid pace.

The Mobile Apps Showdown, now in its second year at the International CES, will showcase the best and brightest stars in the industry. To enter the competition, visit www.MobileAppsShowdown.com.

How it Works

Nomination forms are available now. All entrants will be acknowledged with write-ups, screenshots and a Download Now button on the Mobile Apps Showdown website. (See www.mobileappsshowdown.com). From all the entries submitted, twenty-five semi-finalists will be selected by tech veteran Robin Raskin and a team of mobile experts. The online community will also have a chance to vote for their favorites.

The top ten finalists move on to a live demo competition in front of a live and online 2011 International CES audience and a winner will be declared based on an audience applause-o-meter and an online vote.

Winners will be picked from each of five platform categories: Android, Blackberry, iPhone, Nokia, and Palm Web OS. There will be a winner from the online voters as well as from the live audience vote at the Mobile Apps Showdown at 2011 CES.

Early submissions earn early bird savings and enhanced exposure on the Mobile Apps Showdown website, as well as other media opportunities. Enter before July 15, 2010 and the submission fee will be reduced from $1,000 to $800.

The Mobile Apps Showdown is an event by tech veteran Robin Raskin, who also created the extremely popular CES competition, Last Gadget Standing. In addition, Raskin and her company, Living in Digital Times, produce six CES-based TechZones and conference programs that feature technology and lifestyle, including technology for Health, Baby Boomers, Kids, Moms, Higher Education, and Sports and Fitness.

At the 2010 International CES, Clixtr won the live competition, while Gwabbit took home the online prize. Clixtr is a mobile app that turns smartphones into smartcameras. Its users create events, upload mobile photos, and create real-time event photo streams with the users around them. The online winner, Gwabbit, provides automatic email contact management (ECM) solutions for the contact cloud that automatically searches and identifies contacts embedded in emails and adds or updates that information to your information in a single click.

Rules of the competition.

1. You must submit your applications before Nov. 31, 2010.

2. Your application must be available to the public now or delivered by Q2 of 2011.

3. Semi-finalists (25) and finalists (10) are selected from among all entrants by a panel of journalists and experts from the Netshelter Technology Media network.

4. Semi-finalists and finalists will participate in an online vote, which will affect, but not necessarily determine, the winners. (Judges will have the final word and the votes need to be checked for duplicates.)

5. Only finalists - 10 in all - will present at the Mobile Apps Showdown live event at the 2011 Consumer Electronic Show. The winner of the live event will be selected by the live audience.

Just received this from CEA. If you have the smarts for this competition, jump right in!

Many of the press will be attending live and others (including myself) will be watching many of these on the monitors in the press room where we can fortify ourselves with coffee. The first press parties actually start on Tuesday so by Wednesday evening when Steve Ballmer is presenting many of the press corps will be in need of caffeine. [/COLOR]

I'm planning on attending CES Unveiled and a private DTS function on Tuesday night. On Wednesday, I hope to attend Pepcom's Digital Experience. On Thursday there's a Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) event and Showstoppers at the Wynn. Friday night is the Earth, Wind & Fire concert courtesy of Monster Cable. And there's probably more that I'll get to as well, if I have the stamina.

Mimoco & Marchon 3D

Once you're registered as press at CES you start getting a lot of invitations to stop by booths. Sometimes these invites are from the major exhibitors, sometimes not. Everybody wants press coverage.

Mimoco sent me an email and they looked interesting enough to warrant a visit. Mimoco makes designer USB flash drives and they're going to be introducing a new line based on comic book characters at the show. They already have a Star Wars series with Yoda, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, etc. All the drives come in 2-16 GB of storage space and are preloaded with character-specific content like images, wallpapers, avatars and sound software. A look at their website shows just how cool these are: (http://www.mimoco.com/shop/ )

Marchon 3D first came to my attention in a brief write up in the November 10, 2010 issue of Variety. Marchon will be offering photochromic 3D glasses, which darken in sunlight and can double as sunglasses.(http://marchon.com/m3D/ ) Of course, these are passive 3D glasses. Marchon will be making a major announcement at CES. Their latest line of products will be used for gaming, 3D televisions, computers and more. I'm going to stopping by a number of 3D eyewear booths. The upcoming format war between passive and active 3D glasses is just starting...

THX & Vizio

Like most press at CES I got emails from THX and Vizio to stop by and/or make booth appointments.

THX will be showcasing new audio and display technologies at their suite in the Renaissance Hotel. According to their press release THX will be demonstrating new technologies and product concepts that combine high quality sound with demands for convenience and aesthetic appeal that will weave a premium audio experience seamlessly into your home and lifestyle. THX Chief Scientist Laurie Fincham will be there to discuss these THX innovations. Fincham previously worked at the British loudspeaker companies KEF, Celestion and Goodmans.

Vizio will be showing their new 65" XVT3D650SV that uses passive 3D glasses at the Le Fleur Ballroom at The Wynn. The XVT3D650SV is an edge lit TV with 32 zones for smart-dimming. It has a controller with a QWERTY remote for navigating the on-line apps and has built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi.The XVT3D650SV supports a wide selection of 3D formats to ensure compatibility across Blu-ray, broadcast, cable, satellite, and gaming. In addition to the standard formats, VIZIO also supports SENSIO® Hi-Fi 3D, the high quality, visually lossless 3D format that enables 3D content to be delivered over 2D infrastructure as well as RealD’s patented side-by-side format. I'm really looking foward to seeing this set.

Spatial View, Sensio and Polaroid

Prior to CES, I had never heard of Spatial View but they contacted me and they seem interesting enough to warrant a booth appointment.

Spatial View is a pioneer in stereo 3D content delivery and auto-stereoscopic display technologies. At CES their online store, 3DeeCentral will go live. 3DeeCentral will provide 3D content of videos and images to 3D enabled PCs, mobile devices and internet connected TVs. The library will contain free and paid stereo content for 3D enabled devices.

Sensio and I go way back. The first year they exhibited they had a marvelous display on the history of 3D entertainment at their booth. I always visit them at CES. Sensio has had a landmark year since the last CES. Sensio 3D technology was used to broadcast the 2010 FIFA World Cup live in 33 countries. Sensio 3D was judged Best 3D Technology by Cable and Satellite International Magazine (CSI) and has been adopted by numerous major TV manufacturers and cable TV distributors. They will be announcing two new technologies for 3DTV at CES Unveiled on Tuesday, January 4th. I've read the embargoed press releases and these technologies will dramatically change the way we experience 3DTV. I'll be meeting with Sensio's Richard LaBerge, executive vice president, CMO and Louis Rosseau, vice president marketing & communications at their booth on Saturday.

Polaroid is my last booth visit on Saturday (so far). Polaroid Eyewear will be demonstrating their new line of 3D eyewear for home theater use. These 3D glasses will use passive (circular) polarized lenses.

When the dust settles, I'll be lucky to remember five things about anything...

But, it does appear that passive 3D glasses are out pacing active 3D glasses for displays here at CES. I've been to Marchon 3D, Polaroid, Xpand 3D and others to compare passive vs. active systems. Now that the technology has advanced to displaying full HD using passive 3D glasses, this particular format war might be already over...
