I thought that this year it was hard to keep up with older titles, wait until you read this new article on the Bits tonight, you might even need to get a 3rd job going to keep up with what is coming out
even more Fritz Lang from Kino in 2003 includes: the original 2 ½ hour version of Fritz Lang's Spies (1927); Lang's The Woman in the Moon (1919) and Liliom (1934, with Charles Boyer)
click on the link above and be amazed with what is coming out

Too many dvds to list here that I will be getting in 2003, but off that list, here are the ones I've been waiting for:

    • The Day the Earth Stood Still
    • Once Upon a Time In the West

I'm very happy as well, I've been waiting a long time for many of these.
But still no mention of Yankee Doodle Dandy [IMG] or any of the best 30's Cagney films, Public Enemy, Angels With Dirty Faces, Footlight Parade, etc.

I hope that the studios see great sales on the classic titles, so they are encouraged to release many more.

Well, I intend to buy most of those titles even the ones I think are just okay as opposed to really liking because I think as long as these companies see that catalogue titles or older films are selling, it can only encourage them to release more.

Should these titles not do well, it just gives them ammunition to say, "Old movies don't sell!"

    About the Cagney movies...

I find it more than a coincidence that WB has none of the Cagney titles out already. Perhaps they're planning a wave of them... I know some of them probably need restoration (Public Enemy, Footlight Parade, and Yankee Doodle Dandy, likely) due to age. If anyone knows the true condition, it would be helpful.

I'd buy DVDs for Yankee Doodle Dandy, White Heat, and The Public Enemy in no time! (or at least until I had the money)

I thought that "The Enemy Below" was supposed to be part of the Fox "War Series" in 2003.

Yes, it is one of the releases that Peter forgot to mention the other day when he was talking about classic dvd releases for 2003, in which stated a couple of War film releases have escaped his memory.

I'm really pleased at all the positive feedback to this sort of column, both from this forum and in the many emails I've received. I have no particular "in" at any of the studios that allows me to get advance knowledge of classic DVD releases. I just try to vacuum up all the info that comes out daily at various sites and fora and put it in a digestible form, although the first column was a rather big meal. I'm looking forward to writing these columns and I welcome any information that anyone can provide, or if you just want to correspond on classic films. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected]

Just when I finally got my DVD "Wish List" down to less than 30 titles we get news like this!
2003 will be an expensive year for me in terms of DVD purchases. That's a good problem to have! [IMG]
