Well, he only gave Return of the King 3 and 1/2 stars. I thought The Man on the Train would have been his top movie.

I'm glad to see Pirates on somebody's Top 10. It might be on mine.

I'm surprised to see the lack of Cold Mountain on Top 10 lists and critic's awards. Maybe the movie isn't Oscar material like Harvey and Co. want us to believe?

CM's pulling only 62% at Rotten Tomatoes, but 100% in the Cream of the Crop. It's also holding relatively strong at 82% at Metacritic.

If the Golden Globes are any indication (and certainly not a small one) of impending Oscar success, Miramax should be pretty pleased with the strong showing, doubling ROTK's nominations total. As long as Harvey continues his marketing spending and the box office receipts are not a giant flop, CM should be assured an Oscar nod, after all, critical acclaim and film quality don't matter ;) I'll leave it at that, as this post really belongs in the Oscar discussion thread

Is it my imagination, or are we seeing a HUGE variation in the critics' lists this year, particularly for their number one picks? It seems like in years past there's usually been one film that is chosen as number one by the majority of critics, but there just doesn't seem to be anything approaching a majority concensus this year. Maybe they're always like that.

But there's one big-budget epic that I don't think has been #1 on ANYONE'S list so far: Cold Mountain.

NY Daily News Top 10 via Oscarwatch.com

Jack Matthews

1. "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King": The best fantasy movie experience since 1940's "The Thief of Bagdad," and one of the most deserved success stories in Hollywood history.

2. "21 Grams": Alejandro González Iñárritu's followup to "AmoresPerros" is a brilliantly conceived evocation of loss and spiritual crisis.

3. "Mystic River": The rare movie that's better than its source novel, featuring career performances from Sean Penn and Tim Robbins and providing further evidence of the cool storytelling style of Clint Eastwood.

4. "Winged Migration": This remarkable French documentary about the migratory behavior of birds puts wings on its audience and lets us see the world as they do.

5. "American Splendor": Combining actors with the characters they're playing was just one of the clever strokes of this biographical curio about blue-collar comic book author Harvey Pekar.

6. "The School of Rock": I was laughing so hard I forgot that I hate this kind of music.

7. "The Magdalene Sisters": An eye-opening social drama about Rome-sponsored morals prisons for Irish girls that were operating into the 1990s.

8. "Stuck on You": More inspired lunacy from the Farrelly brothers, about conjoined twins who like each other too much to consider separating.

9. "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World": The story is no "Mutiny on the Bounty" or "Captains Courageous," but it evokes greater period authenticity than any high seas adventure that has gone before.

10. "Bad Santa": Bah humbug indeed, this depraved comedy about a dissolute department store Santa and his felonious elf is more fun than a drunk puppy.

Jami Bernard

1. "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King": Peter Jackson's brilliant third installment of the trilogy evoked the magic the J.R.R. Tolkien books held for me throughout adolescence, the sense of living in another world where every step mattered terribly.

2. "In America": A poor Irish family struggles to get a foothold while their hearts thaw in Jim Sheridan's stunningly intimate labor of love.

3. "American Splendor": You've just gotta love the cranky comics folk hero Harvey Pekar as played so uncompromisingly by Paul Giamatti. The movie, like the comic book, elevates banality to an art.

4. "Triplets of Belleville": Seeing this inspired animated feature by Sylvain Chomet reminds me of the first time I saw Betty Boop join that Stygian "members only" club - it's surprising, funny, creepy and just so one-of-a-kind.

5. "Lost in Translation": Sofia Coppola concocts a mood that can only be called "sleep deprivation," with the help of Scarlett Johanssen and Bill Murray in this sushi out of water tale.

6. "To Be and To Have": This French documentary reveals the ineffable magic of a natural-born teacher on his students, and vice versa.

7. "21 Grams": Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu ("Amores Perros") does it again, weaving strands of people's lives and misery together to raise issues of fate, forgiveness and the debts the living owe the dead.

8. "Mystic River": Clint Eastwood in fine form telling a murder story that goes to the very roots of a tight-knit community. Plus, there's that powerhouse performance by Sean Penn.

9. "Winged Migration": What a technical achievement! This documentary follows flocks of birds on their annual flight patterns, with storm-tossed journeys every bit as riveting as the one in "Master and Commander."

10. "The Station Agent": A charmingly off-beat and life-affirming movie about a dwarf (Peter Dinklage) who, though reluctant, keeps getting drawn into the lives of the people near a deserted train depot.

I wish there were room on this list for "Thirteen," "School of Rock," "The Company," "The Fog of War," "Capturing the Friedmans," "Bad Santa" and "My Architect."

Here are the results of Village Voice's very fascinating and comprehensive (since I have'nt seen a lot of them :D, this is my most favorite among the best of 2003 lists/poll results so far. The winners in their Undistributed category are the ones I will be looking forward to next year 2004. Hey guys. We're taking a new approach to our awards over at HBS this year, and I thought I'd share our 2003 Bitchslap Nominees with you guys. It didn't seem worthy of its own specific thread, but I figured y'all might get a kick out of 'em.

Scott,

I'm curious as to how close either or both of the Matrix movies came to getting a nomination in anything. I thought for sure that the OFCS would be the organization most likely to show the sequels some love.
