Very nice top picks by the National Society of Film Critics. I'm glad Brody is getting the recognition he deserves.

Overall, I'm very pleased with these results. Though they seem a bit stacked into two movies, keep in mind that over 130 online critics had their votes tallied...and these guys liked two specific flicks a WHOLE lot.
(Though six is more than a solid haul, I was hoping TTT would swing the screenplay award, but I certainly have no problem with the winner in that category! I'm proud that we picked Jackson's movie as Best Picture though! :emoji_thumbsup: )
I wanted Paxton as breakthrough, but Romanek is an excellent choice too. J. Moore seemed a lock to me; she's that damn good. Maggie G. was up for lead actress, though I'm thrilled she won the Breakthrough Award...particularly considering who her competition was (Eminem, Nia Vardalos, etc.). And let's give it up for the Samantha Morton pick. My OFCS pals really know their stuff! ;)
What do you guys think?

Great list, Scott!
The only one I have any beef with is Dennis Quaid winning Supporting Actor -- I really did have some problems with his performance, and felt others have done better with their material (Chris Cooper for Adaptation, in particular). All the others...congrats to them, especially Jackson & co. for their wins!
Oh yeah, and I think I was one of maybe TWO people on the entire forum who felt Samantha Morton gave an award-winning performance in Minority Report (not just Morvern Callar, which I've not yet seen but for which everybody seems to gravitate to when her name is brought up for acting nods this year). I'm wondering if the same scene in MR that really did it for me also made it for the OFCS critics who voted for her (that scene right as Anderton shoots Crow, where she lets out a very pitable scream
). That one moment stuck with me more than almost any other scene I've seen all year...big-time congrats to her!

Overall a very good list Scott. I can see why you are pleased.

Unlike Dana, I feel Quaid’s performance to be absolutely first rate—for me, the standout of his career.

Personally, I find The Pianist to be the outstanding movie of the year. ‘TTT’, magnificent achievement that it is, suffers too much from the ‘second act’ syndrome. It will be easier to laud TLOTR, when it is complete. For me, Jackson is making one movie, not three. Just as Tolkien wrote one book, not three.

I was also happy to see Samantha Morton on the OFCS list. If Dana is one of the two here, then I must be the other. She carried a huge chunk of that film. I need to see FFH.

Take care,
Chuck

My Tivo caught something that's going to be on the E! channel. The "2003 Critics' Choice Awards" (which is the Broadcast Film Critics Association) will be broadcast the 18th of January. Here in Chicago (Central time) it's on at 7:00pm and repeated at 6:00am the 19th. It's supposed to last 2 hours, and there's no indication if the first broadcast will be live. I'd highly doubt it.
Here's a quick link to their nominees (thanks to Alex Fung's page).
I love how they have 10 nominees for Best Picture. Talk about covering all your bases! They do have all the "right" ones listed. They only have 3 Best Actor nominees, but 4 Best Actress nominees. How odd.
Nice to see that they have a category for "Best Digital Acting Performance" and, of course, Gollum is nominated.

Here's an intersting tidbit I found on variety.com about the BAFTAs. I went to the BAFTA site to try and find an actual press release, but like most web sites, it's amazingly content-free. If anyone can find out more about this, I'd like to know.

BAFTA's bevy of pix
Long lists of kudos contenders unveiled

By ADAM DAWTREY

LONDON -- The BAFTA race may still be wide open, but the field narrowed a bit Wednesday with the publication of the long list of contenders by the British Academy of Film & TV Arts.

"Far From Heaven" cannot win best film, nor can "About Schmidt," "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" or "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind."

None of those pics are on the list of 20 contenders. Brit candidates "Sweet Sixteen," "Morvern Callar" and "24 Hour Party People" are also missing.

The long lists are compiled from the first round of voting by BAFTA members. The final nominees will be selected from those lists by a combination of membership and jury voting.

With 20 contenders in each category (apart from original screenplay, when a blip in the system produced 21 runners), the long lists do little more than confirm that the obvious favorites are, indeed, strongly in the frame.

"Chicago," "Gangs of New York," "The Hours," "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" and "The Pianist" crop up in just about every section they can. So, perhaps a bit less obviously, do "Catch Me if You Can," "Frida," "Dirty Pretty Things," "The Magdalene Sisters," "The Quiet American," "The Road to Perdition" and "Talk to Her."

Other pics with frequent mentions include "Adaptation," "Rabbit-Proof Fence," "Y tu mama tambien," "City of God," "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," "8 Mile" and "Punch-Drunk Love."

The next BAFTA voting deadline is Jan. 23, with the nominations to be announced Jan. 27.
