Glieberman makes me nuts and I generally do not fully respect his opinion, but your assessment of the two was quite interesting Dana.

This is starting to look a lot like last year. Pretty wide open, though the critics groups are always like that to some extent (as well as favoring actor pieces IMO).

I think the Best Production thing for Gangs is a bit telling, even though the LA critics gave the pix award to Schmidt.

Here's how the New York Film Critics Circle has voted so far. This post will be updated as votes come in:
Best Picture Far From Heaven
...
Best Supporting Actor Dennis Quaid, Far From Heaven
Okay, now that pick has just cast their list into question. I've probably only seen a third of the films they have, but even I could find five or six other candidates that better qualified than Quaid in FFH. His performance, while great for the most part, had problems. The only thing I can think of that could explain the outcome of their vote is that they feel that Julianne Moore was so brilliant (she was) that her performance hid any of those flaws from their eyes. I liken it to seeing Ethan Hawke being nominated by the Academy for Training Day, because Denzel Washington's performance was so phenomenal; just about everybody then was saying "WTF?!"
I'd instead have picked Chris Cooper (Adaptation) or Paul Newman (Road to Perdition) before Quaid.
Also, Edwin, what's the difference beteween the NYFC Online and the NYFC Circle? Who votes in the latter?

Dana, the NYFCC are critics whose reviews appear on newsprint (i.e. Joe Morgenstern (Wall Street Journal) and I believe Mike Clark (USA Today) is also one of them). I ran into a list once of the entire makeup. If I find it, I'll post it.

I have also decided to compile all the organizations' list based on their number of appearances. You will find it in my original post, which I will continue to update. Because each list is different as far as number of films, this is the best way I can think of.

I may decide later on to compile each individual critic's Top 10 list if there is sufficient enough lists to make it representative.

Seth, thanks for all your help.

Pleasantly surprised to see Edie Falco racking up some awards. Would be nice if she got an AA nom and that would give some well deserved attention to Sunshine State.

Pleasantly shocked to see Far From Heaven garnering so many awards. My tastes rarely line up with this sort of thing.

Would like to see more attention going Punch Drunk Love's way, but it's getting left off of most of these lists.

And hate that Spirited Away is confined to the animation ghetto. Just give it an animation award and then you can forget about it for best film.

Seth, I believe that Best Production Award to "Gangs of New York" from the LAFC is misleading. It is really for Production Design and not for the entire production. I'm not ready to rule "Gangs" out just yet. Other than LOTR it's the only real epic on the slate this year. And unlike LOTR it is a (somewhat) historical epic which The Academy has had a tendency to favor over the years.

Well Dana, this is certainly what makes a horse race. Although I’ve not seen every movie released this year, I’m leaning very heavily towards Dennis Quaid as the best supporting performance for the year.

I thought his performance brilliant. The first time I’ve been this impressed with him as an actor.

Actually Mike, my current favorite picture of the year -- the Pianist fits the description of a historical epic that should do well with the academy.

Dennis Quaid's performance in Far From Heaven is very strong and worthy of an Oscar nod. This is also the year where he excelled in a lead performance in The Rookie, which should make him very noticeable during Oscar time.

It's important to keep one thing in mind, and that is these critics lists rarely represent the actual winners. They just put you on to certain players in the Oscar race (as well as point you to some great films :) ), but are often much more willing to play "risky" with their selections than the Academy will.
I find this even more amplified with the acting awards. Remind me again of Buscemi's Oscar nom last year for Best Supporting Actor. ;)
And of course Spacek had the Oscar wrapped up based on all these lists and then...
I do think if you aren't getting mentioned at all or very lightly then you are in trouble later, but that's about it.
For my Best Pix formula (which picked ABM last year and tests correctly for the last 9 years overall - I created it for last year), I don't even consider the critics picks, only the Guilds noms/wins, Globe noms/wins, and Oscar noms.
None of this is to downplay the importance of these other lists, just to say that what is important about them is not so much what they say about the Oscars, but what they say about the films they mention in terms of interesting filmmaking.
But it still won't keep us from speculating. :)
So how many wins does Solaris have? (see, I can take the drubbing with my chin up ;) )

I love these lists, thanks to everyone for suppling them. I don't give a rat's ass about the Academy Awards so these lists are my own, personal, end of the year Oscars.
