Hello and thanks in advance for any advice. I recently moved to a condo with a large living room and I'd like to get a home theater setup going. I have 0 knowledge as far as setups are concerned but I am very handy. The dimensions are 34'D x 26' w x 20' tall (top of shades = 16' tall). The beam in the 1st picture is about 17ft off the floor and 24ft away from the shades. I'd like to mount the projector underneath the beam running across the living room and point it towards the shades. I'm hoping some sort of roll down projector screen is mountable right above the shades. Another option is mounting a permanent screen on the windows but I'd like to avoid it if possible. I am aware that this living room setup is not ideal and I am fine with that. I only watch at night and it's close to pitch black. It would be very convenient to run wireless speakers if the sound quality is good enough. I am not going to purchase any furniture until I figure out if this project is feasible or not. This system will probably be used twice a month at most (netflix, UFC). Any thoughts and recommendations on equipment are appreciated.

I am looking for recommendations on:
-Screen setup (roll down or fixed) I would prefer to build my own if possible
-Speakers
-Receiver
-Projector

200” is a huge screen. Even with a something like a JVC NZ900 you will be on the dim side for the image. And you need around 20 feet of throw distance for the projector.

So if your heart is set on a screen in that realm, you’ll probably need to spend some time playing with projector calculators to see how different devices can fit your space.

With a $6k projector budget, I’d have advised an Epson LS12000, Sony XW5000ES, or a JVC NZ7. That gives you a 4K system with good to great native contrast and superb dynamic contrast, and good HDR tone mapping. Paired with a normal screen, you can have 120” to 160” image. And all with reasonable fan noise.

You’re spending a lot of money solely to have huge HD image. That’s a very strong personal preference. I’m not sure how to help. That’s a preference I’m not familiar with; I don’t know what good pairings are with a high-end gear intended for big images.

I'll make some projector, motorized and manual drop down projection screens and audio recommendation tomorrow.
For now I'd like you to know that if you just paint the ceiling and left/right wall in front of where the projection screen will be located (in front of the windows with flat black or at least dark gray with flat paint it wil be the songle most important thing you can do to give you an excellent Home Cinema premium image quality.

Even better than flat black paint would be to use black Duvetyne fabric. You just need 3'-4' on the ceiling above the projection screen and 3'-4' on the left/right walls next to the projection screen.

This will stop the reflected light that will come from the white ceiling and left/right walls from bouncing back onto the projection screen.

Designing and building home theaters is one of my key specialities. We are just now completing our new 2nd A/V Showroom that is a city block square basement of a new building directly across the street from our main A/V showroom.

We built 16 Cinema Demo rooms all with different theater seats, different large Dolby Atmos/DTS:X audio systems. 10 rooms have high-end projectors and 6 dedicated rooms with UST projections systems. We have a A/V HDMI matrix distribution system that had Kaleidescape, Blu-ray Disc player, and an OTA Antenna for ATSC 3.0 Next Gen TV that is distributed to all 16 Cinema Demo rooms.

Your expertise is greatly appreciated Robert. If after it's all set up and the image quality is not to my liking, I will paint 3-4' of the ceiling and walls. I was looking at my 2 white blackout shades and if it's the right material (low chance) and there was not a split in the middle, it would have made for a very convenient screen. It's manually raised and lowered with a metal string. I would be interested in removing the 2 existing center shades and having a single larger one made with the correct material for a screen.

I am concerned about the sound dampening so I'm guessing I will need quite a bit of foam art up on the walls.

Robert, I'm hoping you will be recommending some wireless speaker setups (although I am concerned about lag).

Random thought: the Christie projector might be very loud (fan noise). You might need to build a hush box for it or locate it in a different room (wall cut out with glass window light pass through).

Hey Dave, I used the projector calculator and it looks like much less powerful units will work. Thanks for pointing out the noise with that specific projector, it would definitely have been an added headache.

Given the large size of your space *and* desire for such a large screen/view, I gotta think no wireless speaker setups could possibly satisfy even beyond the typical issues w/ wireless speaker setups.

These seem to have great reviews and from the ones I read there don't seem to be any connectivity issues. Are you familiar with this system?

Sony's new flagship Theater Quad 16 Channel Dolby Atmos/DTS:X wireless audio system would be a very good choice for your room.

Yes, a dedicated audio receiver and wired speakers if properly selected and professionally installed can be designed to deliver moderately better audio performance, but higher cost and more work.
