Sorry; I'm not sure exactly where to put this post; figured it would do the best good here. If any admin. wishes to move it elsewhere, that would be cool.
Anyway, talked to a co-worker on site today. He told me he got these cool "PSD 2.8" speakers, 3 in all, for an amazing deal of $260.00 CDN. (2 floor standing with either a sub or centre, I think.) The 2 dudes in van asked for $400, but co-worker talked them down, I guess. He was told the usual - boss screwed up, got 2 extra sets of speakers by mistake, these guys just out to make an easy buck by selling them under the table. Speakers are apparently worth "$3000.00" I was told; somehow I doubt it.
So, buddy told me he got the plate number, names of guys from driver's licenses, and company info from invoices - all AFTER he fell for the pitch and BOUGHT these wonderful speakers. Then he told me something about them being liquid cooled or dampened, then I told him the truth. He's now talking to police for advice.
This is an OLD scam, as far as I know there is NO speaker company named PSD (not the fine Canadian
psb line we all know ) that sells 3 speakers for around $3000.00. This guy got scammed outside a Canadian Tire store in West Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. If someone knows of a REPUTABLE speaker line called PSD, please correct me. For all those looking for that elusive Sweetheart Of A Deal , I don't think this was it.

It sounds to me like your co worker is fortunate. After giving money to a couple of guys in a van offering speakers I would have fully expected to find nothing but a brick in the box upon unpacking it.

I see those vans at least once every 1-2 weeks!
Nothing against them though. Most folks I know would benefit from such an experiance, as it will save more in the long run as they learn and become more careful for years to come.
That's of course is somebody tells them it's a scam, and they are not euphoric about it for years to come :D

I always wonder how that conversation would go.

"Mr. Officer, I attempted to buy some high quality stolen property, but these guys cheated me, because it wasn't high quality and it wasn't stolen!"

The W.C. Fields quote, "You can't cheat an honest man." doesn't always hold true, but more often than not it does.

I ALSO WAS APPROACHED BY THE SAME VAN IN COLORADO SPRINGS. THE SPEAKERS ARE CRAP A FRIEND OF MINE BOUGHT SOME AND THEY ARE HORABLE. I TOLD THEN ID GIVE THEM 100 FOR A WHOLE SET AND THEY WERE ACTUALLY GOING TO TAKE IT. I FIGURED THAT IF THEY WOULD TAKE 100 FOR ALL OF THEM THEN THEY HAD TO BE CRAP. I ALSO CHECKED WITH CSPD AND THEY SAID THAT THEY ARE LAGIT NOT STOLEN JUST CRAP SPEAKERS I GUESS.

They're not stolen, they're just horrendously cheap. The guys are also operating without the proper licenses, so they can be arrested

Yes, this is, of course, not news. I honestly think that if you haven't been approached by the white van speaker people (or know someone who has)- then you are in the minority. I have seen stories of this from as far away as Australia.

I checked with police here in Mississauga and they say there's nothing that can be done as this is a completely legitimate business operation. The sales pitch is certainly dishonest, but apparently not illegal.

If you're buying speakers 'under the table', why would you get an invoice? THINK people!

In the warmer months, I get stopped by the white van of sham EVERY tuesday, leaving Futureshop after getting the new release. They seem to target either people with obvious money, driving nicer cars and such, or simply people who look easily duped :)
Here in Calgary, I have noticed three such vans, always with two people in them. I have the license plates written down somewhere around my house.
cheers!

Could someone explain to me why this is any more shameful than the false claims made by Bose?

A friend of mine in Sweden bought his speakers from the guys there that do the same thing. He didn't like the product and wanted to return them, and he did, got his money back and everything. Like has been mentioned above, it's a legitimate business with shady marketing.
Oh, and I was approached by TGIAWV a little over a year ago here. I declined the offer though. :)
I wonder how much they sell for each year considering it seems to be a worldwide operation.

On a slightly off topic sidenote about a month ago some guy knocked on my door trying to sell some extra steaks that he had left over from a restaurant delivery. I wouldn't have eaten that stuff if he was giving it away, for all I know he's selling dog meat.

I was approached by the white van speaker people last month. They looked really shady. The first guy flashed me an ID card really fast and said they were from some company that installs sound equipment for bars and restaurants. They just happen to have these speakers left over and they wanted to get rid of them.

The speakers had a wierd name that i dont recall. And they were home theater speakers, with towers, center, satilites and sub. I was thinking, um these are for home use, not the comercial speakers they claimed. I said not interested and they drove on. Until now I had never heard of these people besides my expeirence. I had no idea they are everywere.

Cameron,

In the future, please consider trying the HTF spell check function. It's easy and best of all, completely free. Your post was essentially unreadable due to a dozen spelling errors.

Thanks

Vince

a guy on another board I read ripped off the white van guys, he told them he'd take the speakers but needed to go to the ATM or something, so they put them in the guys truck and were to follow him to the ATM but he took off, posted pics of them, and the drivers. Pretty high quality stuff.. not :D
