    Hi guys,

I was happy with my Denon AVR 3300 connected to Paradigm Mini Monitors, CC-350, and ADP surrounds with PS-1000 sub. Well after reading this forum, I have caught the upgrade bug.

I took the plunge and am awaiting Paradigm Ref 100's. My dilemma is getting a power amp to reallly make these babies great with music. I recently demoed the Rotel 1080 and the Anthem MC2 but wasn't really impressed with them. Demoed the Bryston 4B-ST and just fell in love with the amp. Also demoed the Rotel 1090 and Classe CA-201. Definitely liked the Classe better than the Rotel. It was just more musical to me. Still wanted to go with the Bryston.

Managed to talk to a dealer about the Bryston 4B-ST who said I should consider the Sherbourn 5/1500A. Same sound but half the price. He carried the Parasound as well but didn't recommend the Parasound over the Sherbourn or Bryston. My question is this...I just put in an order for 2 Odyssey Stratos Monoblocks. Talked to Klause who says I have 2 weeks to decide whether I really want them or not. Just wanted some opinions on whether I made the right choice. It's more than I wanted to pay but if it does what the reviews say, then it was worth it! Help!!! Thanks in advance

PhillipC, looks like you have quite a budget. The Rotel 1080 is alerady quite a fine amp and is in Stereophile's list of Recommended components. IIRC its a Class B product. Its the 2 channel puppy putting out 200Wpc, and should at least match the performance of the Rotel RMB-1095 5 channel amp. I mention this because the RMB-1095, Sherbourn 5/1500A and Parasound HCA-2205AT are routinely compared, and most fine them comparable in price and performance. So, if you like the Classe and Bryston so much more than the Rotel 1080, the Sherbourn and Parasound should be downgrades.

The Odyssey Stratos series have been widely acclaimed as the price/performance leader, but I haven't heard them personally. I did however read a review of the 2 channel Odyssey Stratos on the Absolute Sound some time last year. They were comparing it to the Rotel RB-1090(a 380Wpc stereo amp) and concluded that while there were differences in delivery, they were more or less the same performance wise. The RB-1090 is quite an improvement over the RMB-1095, which would probably translate to an improvement of the Sherbourn and Parasound amps, so you should be pretty happy with the Stratos if it performs around the same as the 1090. I'm not sure how it compares with the Bryston or Classe though.
