My best years would be 81-82. also the year i graduated from HS.
Blade Runner
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn (or Khan as some like to say around here)
Das Boot
Conan
Continental Divide
Creepshow
Excalibur
Fast times at Ridgemont High
Heavy Metal
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Nighthawks
Porky's
Stripes
The Thing
Those are just the ones i own from that "season".
Oh, and i know NONE of those would be an Oscar type movie. Oscar hates action, si fi, and comedy. But i love them, and so did the Box Office.

I don't think being a foreign film makes you ineligible to be nominated for best picture. Le Grand Illusion (a French film) was nominated for 1938 (a year behind cause of the delay in getting a U.S. release, which is necessary). As recently as 2002, the Pianist (a French, German, Polish, British, but definitely not U.S.) film was nominated.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was released in English. Not being a foreign language film it was not eligible in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Regardless, I agree with George’s thesis: many films get overlooked every year by the Academy and are later considered more deserving than (what turns out to be in retrospect) inferior, routine films.
