I have an old Hughes system from 1996 and it has a mode for 16x9. Although, I only have a 4x3 TV, setting it to 16x9 makes no difference at all. The menus aren't tall and skinny. Everything's the same. I figured a 16x9 mode would make the menus all anamorphic, but it don't. What does this 16x9 mode do?

I had the same question long ago. Seems that some units (Sony's Ultimate TV receiver, for example) can do a version of scaling if you choose the 16 x 9 option, but in your case it does. . . nothing.

    Seems it's just for future-proofing.

With the exception of the above mentioned Ultimate TV there's pretty much no use for it. DirecTV has once long ago broadcast a movie with 16x9 enhancement -- and in that case setting the receiver to 16x9 would've given you the same result as setting DVD player to 16x9 and popping in an anamorphic DVD. But since that time all letterbox movies were shown as 4:3 letterbox, so the selection does nothing.

It would be nice if Directv would show ALL there PPV movies in an Anamorphic widescreen format. That way, if you play them on a widescreen TV, it'll look as good as DVD.

Ken, I agree and I would like to hear all PPV in 5.1.
By the way, they have DD 5.1 why not DTS 5.1? Licensing problems?
