I can't find my manual so hoping you guys can answer this. There is an option on all my Sony DBS receivers for setting the TV aspect ratio. What's it for? If something is letterbox I have to use the screen options on the TV to fill the screen. As far as I know Directv does not transmit any anamorphic material.

    What am I missing here?

    Thanks

It is to tell your receiver the aspect ratio of your display—it has nothing to do with what is being telecast, but rather with reproducing the signal that is being telecast.

So, if your TV is a widescreen display, set it to 16:9 and if it is not, then use the 4:3 setting.

Lew, sorry to be dense but what effect does it actually have? I tried changing it on the receiver feeding my widescreen and I can't see any difference.

At present, it has no effect, since DTV is an entirely 4:3 medium. Even movies that are in their OAR are letterboxed within a 4:3 frame.

So, I don't think it does anything yet.

Brian, that was my suspicion. Thanks for confirming.

Lew, I was aware of the digital broadcast thing with the transmitted sidebars. Regardless, it has nothing to do with the setting on the receiver as far as I can see. And this aspect ratio setting is on a 6 yr-old receiver I have which way pre-dates HD.

Still looks like a redundant setting to me.

On a 6 year old box, it does nothing.
