I have a dishplayer and there is a setting where you tell it what format TV you have--either 4:3 or 16:9. What does this change? I can't see any difference at all.

Perhaps this only changes things when a widescreen program is on?

I agree with you, when I got my dish, it just had the 16x9 setting...later on, these other settings were uploaded to the menu, but i've tried the different settings, and see no difference myself...my tv is a sony xbr400 with squeeze, and the 16x9 setting looks just fine to me, so i guess i'll leave it unless someone can tell me any advantage..regular shows appear no different either. mike buckles

Found the answer at dbsforums.com: "On anamorphic channels, 16x9 outputs the channel as anamorphic video, while 4x3 outputs letterboxed video so it doesn't look squished. There are no anamorphic channels, so in reality - it does nothing."

Heh, heh. If you go to dbsforums.com search for 16:9 under the pvr section.
