Personally, I'm happy they are doing an Ultimate Version of this movie. True, other movies need more work such as Timecop, Scarface, and Happy Gilmore among others, but still...the extra bits going to just the video and audio will make this release better quality.
I do hope they fix the commentary error.

They should stop this ultimate edition madness and release films that are not on dvd yet!
what is wrong with you people?

I wonder if Jurassic Park and The Lost World will be next, around the time of Jurassic Park 3?
Maybe even in a boxed set!

The DTS version that is out right now is full bitrate. I don't think I'll be getting this Ultimate Edition.

I made a posting about studios doing this a few days back....this *sounds* like an example of what I was saying: a pointless re-release.

I'm really hoping the transfer is improved. It's pretty grainy and unless I'm wrong, I don't think the actual movie had this level of grain. This goes for some other early Universal titles as well like Casino.

The DTS version that is out is full bitrate DTS. Now it this new Ultimate DTS one will have Dolby Digital. How the heck can it fit? Improved compression I guess hunh? :)

...and where are the anamorphic re-releases of Psycho and Vertigo? They sound like perfect ultimate edition candidates to me...

Looks like another title on the way, baby. I rented the CE just to see what the quality was and it was good. I don't know why they feel the need to revisit this particular title, but it's definitely going into the collection here.

I would definetly bite if I did not already own the Collector's Edition. It is one of my favorite movies, but like others, I don't think the upgrade is worth the money.
If they continue the trend, it will be the same transfer as before. The transfer is also very faithful to what I remember seeing in the theater.
Now if they could just Release the Ultimate Edition of The Mummy Returns to begin with, that might suggest a bit of rational thinking at Universal.

If a movie is not available in OAR, than it might as well not be available at all.

Hey, I guess that when I signed up to Columbia House, the fact that it failed (After a month, still no disks, and I got a refund on my credit card WTF!!!)
But the bright side was that American Pie (One of the 4 disks I ordered) was rereleased as a UE so it was not so bad. Now that 12 Monkeys (Another of the 4 disks I chose) will also get a UE. I guess it's not so bad then...
All I need are SE's of Good Will Hunting and A Time To Kill and I will be totally happy of not being able to sign up to Columbia House!

I don't have this great movie, yet. Is the full-rate DTS that great, or am I better of with the UE? I'm leaning toward the new release, but if the full bit-rate is THAT good.... Thanks in advance..

Hmm. Do you think they'll actually bother to give the UK market a decent version. The Aussies have one with commentary and anamorphic I believe.
Here in the UK we have one version. Widescreen non-anamorphic with the Hampster Factor and that's it. Good as the documentary is, this is a favourite movie of mine and I'd rather not have to get R1 and suffer NTSC pulldown if poss.

The DTS trakc on the existing disc is full rate, but offers little improvement (if any) over the Dolby track. Honestly, it's nothing worth getting remotely excited about.

I wonder will they secure the rights to the original short film (name escapes me) that inspired this movie? If they include that I might be tempted to replace the beautiful Signature Collection LaserDisc.

I'll be buying it as I didn't buy the original figuring it would become a Ultimate Edition anyway.
I mean come'on You guys I'm sure knew this was coming. It isn't rocket science with Universal

I sure hope that Apollo 13 is next as I'd buy that in a snap as well.

Notice how that news announcement at dvdreview.com doesnt mention if the full 90 minute documentary will be on there. Universal has a habit of hashing documentaries (Jaws), so unless someone confirms the whole thing will be on there, you should all be very suspicious.
