I would probably want decent mix of genres. For instance, I would pick Aliens or T2, but not both.

LOTR
Saving Private Ryan
Seven Samurai
The Good the Bad and the Ugly
Vertigo or Sunset Blvd or All About Eve or The Third Man or Notorious
Before Sunrise & Before Sunset or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Aliens or T2
Toy Story 1 & 2
Magnolia or The Shawshank Redemption
Three Colors Trilogy or Dekalog

If TV shows are included, then I would drop Toy Story 1 & 2 for Babylon 5.

Edit: Crap, there is the Star Wars or Indiana Jones or Back to the Future (to a lesser extent) category, but I don't wanna drop anything on the list either :frowning:. I would probably trade the Toy Story 1 & 2 for Star Wars as well.

And then the 2001: A Space Odyssey or Contact or Solaris (2000) or 12 Monkeys.... Aaaaaargh!

Ahhh, desert island disc threads. Reminds me of the days of alt.video.dvd and alt.video.laserdisc. What the heck, just off the top of my head:

The Incredibles (Widescreen)
For a Few Dollars More (R2 SE)
Alien Quadrilogy (9 disc set)
Fellowship of the Ring EE
The Two Towers EE
Return of the King EE
Pulp Fiction SE
The Kubrick Colletion (Remastered)
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (R2 UE)
Kill Bill vol 1 & 2

Okay, that last entry is a cheat, but someday it will be available in one comprehensive package!

Honorable Mentions (discs which almost made the cut):
Ultimate Matrix Box
Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind (2 disc SE)
Licence to Kill (R2 UE)
Thunderball (R2 UE)
The Good the Bad and the Ugly (original release)
Once Upon a Time in the West
Halloween (H25 edition)
Friday the 13th (Warner Bros R2)
The Evil Dead (Elite)
Lilo & Stitch

Yup, Disney films, gruesome horror, Sergio Leone, and Tarantino. Some people call that eclectic, I just call it good taste. :)

As someone who has actually lost everything before (I live in New Orleans, do the math), I must say that the stuff you think you'd replace instantly ain't necessarily so. A year on, my small collection -- I have about 80 DVDs at the present time -- bears little resemblance to my old one. Money is obviously a factor, but so is the desire not to retread old ground. It's a strange feeling to suddenly own nothing except the clothes on your back; you have to experience it before knowing exactly how you'd react.

The first thing I replaced was my Criterion edition of "Straw Dogs". Being a huge Peckinpah fan, and seeing how this one was already OOP, that was a no-brainer. Next, I think, came a bootleg DVD of Bob Dylan's "Eat the Document" (the best rock 'n' roll movie ever, despite the editing). After that, I worked pretty hard on replacing my Peckinpah collection, and have gotten deeper into Orson Welles than I ever was before. I always liked Welles, but finding something new to collect was important for me, I think, psychologically.

I have also bought the odd back catalogue title as-and-when they have been released. Some have been fortuitous -- Criterion's "The Man Who Fell To Earth" was a perfect replacement for my lost Anchor Bay edition -- but many have been blind-buys.

Some films that I love, and used to watch regularly, still haven't been replaced. "This is Spinal Tap", for example. I'll get it eventually, I'm sure, but, like I say, 2006 has been a year for new passions, not for dwelling on past ones.

Sorry to inject a dose of that nasty reality stuff into your nice, little desert-island-discs fantasy :)

As you were.

The Story of The Third Reich - the most comprehensive documentary on the subject
Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid
The ANZACS - cheating here a bit as it has 3 discs - but it is a brilliant tribute to the Aussies involved in the Gallipoli campaign in WWI. Showcases Australia's greatest acting talent in Andrew Clarke, Jon Blake, Chris Cummins and Paul Hogan.
