I found these two reviews of the new Seijun Suzuki DVDs from the british Label “Second Sight” on the british DVD-Times website:
    Tokyo Drifter

Looks like they are superior to the Criterion transfers and they’re also anamorphic. Has anybody both versions of the DVDs and can compare them (colors, details, scratches, subtitles etc.). What’s about the interviews on the Criterion discs. Are they worth the inferior picture quality? Damn! I don’t know, which version I should buy!

Well, I write for that site, so hopefully on Wednesday or Thursday I should have reviews of both the Criterions up.

Despite Criterion's cooler-than-cool packaging and Suzuki interviews, being non-anamorphic and in the wrong AR (they're slightly stretched), it looks like Second Sight's anamorphic versions are the way to go.
