Now that Kino and Criterion have given us a major portion of the missing United Artists titles on Blu-ray, the question remains: where the hell are the PiNK PANTHER movies? Has the delay anything to do with acquiring the rights to the one movie (RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER, released by ITC) that...
The Mouse on the Moon DVD Review
After getting the best of the United States in The Mouse That Roared, the tiny duchy of Grand Fenwick takes a second bite at the apple in Richard Lester’s The Mouse on the Moon. With a new array of stars and a...

Well, it's a western and not a lot of those get made anymore.

The William Friedkin directed The Night They Raided Minsky's in an anomaly in every sense of the word. It was written by Arnold Schulman and Norman Lear

I have been reading seemingly constant complaints on line regarding Warner Bros. and presumed non-activity or lack of interest in bringing important catalog titles to the home video market.
Wrong.
Several weeks ago, I had a meal with friends from WB, and while I cannot report titles, I can...

Billy Wilder's 1964 Kiss Me, Stupid, is classic '60s Wilder, and a film that you'll find has a great deal going on just beneath its black & white, Panavision surface.

Strange thing is, that this is an MGM release via Olive, but it looks terrific.

Superb textures, with a nice...
Love and Death Blu-ray Review
Woody Allen capers through nineteenth century Russian history, literature, and theater (with some Ingmar Bergman-esque touches thrown in for good measure), all filtered through his Brooklyn sensibilities in the often hilarious Love and...
Lenny Blu-ray Review
The rise and fall of controversial comedian Lenny Bruce is captured in piecemeal, sometimes unsatisfying fashion in Bob Fosse’s docudrama Lenny, a sad and sour rags-to-riches-to-rags saga that does well capturing an era and making some points...

A member in good standing of the AIP Roger Corman horror comedies of the 1960s, Mr. Corman's Tales of Terror falls at the mid-point of the series. It leaves but a single title, The Premature Burial, to be released.

The "tales" are a trilogy, starring Corman comedy-horror...
Our friends at Warner Bros. have pulled three titles, never before released on Blu-ray, and combined them with a fourth of mild significance. The four are being released March 3 at a street price of $27.
While that still works out to around $9 per disc, I consider that a decent deal, as the...
Far From the Madding Crowd Blu-ray Review

Far From the Madding Crowd, Director John Schlesinger's sumptuous film adaptation of Thomas Hardy's novel, has come to Blu-ray in all of its roadshow glory courtesy of the Warner...
Fellini Satyricon Blu-ray Review
Having already given us a tour of hedonistic modern-day Rome with La Dolce Vita, director Federico Fellini decided on a lascivious return to Italy, this time of the ancient variety by bringing to the screen his <em...
Another odd MGM transfer.
Woody Allen's 1975 Love and Death.
Great film. Prime, beautifully written and produced 1970s Allen.
And strangely, a beautiful Blu-ray for Twilight Time to release from MGM.
Not to be missed.

Bob Fosse's 1974 non-musical, "Lenny," with Dustin Hoffman in the lead, as photographed by Bruce Surtees, is a black and white wonder.
The other wonder here is that it comes from MGM, and unlike most of their work, looks quite terrific. Not perfect, but damned good.
A bit of sparkle, which...

Delbert Mann's beautiful 1955 Academy Award-winning, Marty, is a great film in an adequate transfer from MGM via Kino Lorber.

The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming directed by Norman Jewison is one of my favorite comedies of the '60s. Possibly an off-shoot by screenwriter William Rose of his early It's a Mad...

The Road to Hong Kong Blu-ray Review
The various roads that Bing Crosby and Bob Hope cinematically traversed for over twenty years came to a sadly inglorious end with The Road to Hong Kong. Worse, the two comedians didn’t even let their six-Road co-star Dorothy...
Going along with my proposition that well-shot TV/Cable productions almost always look far superior on Blu-ray, I ran the first season of Fargo, which finally made it to cable, through its paces.
Shot with an Arri Alexa, the show has a beautiful, almost film-like appearance, and holds up...

One doesn't have to listen too closely to hear the strains of Ben-Hur, which would come four years later, in Miklos Rozsa's beautiful score for Vincente Minnelli's 1956 Lust for Life.

Produced in what were still the early days of tri-pack color negative, a decision was made, possibly...
While Bill Condon's Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (1995), may not have the textures of the 1992 original, but it's still a fun ride.
With the storyline moved from Chicago to New Orleans -- not sure why Robitaille visited Chicago -- something is gained, but in the end this may be a sequel for...

I recall seeing Frank Capra's A Hole in the Head (strangely) in Miami Beach.

Unfortunately Olive's new Blu-ray neither looks nor sounds like the above mentioned film at the time of release.

Although Mr. Capra created many superb classic films in the 1930s through '40s, after...

Lewis Milestone's Pork Chop Hill (1959) is a war story directed by a gentleman who knew how to direct war stories.

This particular war story concerns the Korean War, and the efforts to take control of Pork Chop Hill.

The film is peppered with a superb cast -- Gregory Peck...
The Purple Rose of Cairo Blu-ray Review
Woody Allen’s deft amalgamation of comedy, romance, fantasy, and, ultimately, heartbreak makes The Purple Rose of Cairo one of his masterpieces. Borrowing some fantastical ideas from Buster Keaton’s Sherlock...
The Bride Wore Black Blu-ray Review
François Truffaut took some motifs from Alfred Hitchcock and mixed in his own unique blend of character-laden melancholy to come up with The Bride Wore Black. Appearing in the latter part of the cynical 1960s, The...

The great French novelist, playwright and filmmaker Marcel Pagnol, created some superb works. The Baker's Wife is a favorite. Fanny, Marius, Cesar, The Well-digger's Daughter...

Kenneth Branagh's 1989 version of Shakespeare's King Henry the Fifth has seen better days.

Running Scared (1986) Blu-ray Review
The buddy cop action comedy mash-up sub-genre was extremely popular in the 1980s, bringing us such films as 48 Hrs, Red Heat, Stakeout, Lethal Weapon, <em...
Who'd have thunk it?
A 40 year-old Barbra Streisand, taking the reins of her first directorial effort, playing the role of a boy less than half her age?
Squint just a bit, and it's believable.
Virtually everything else about this film is firing on all sixteen cylinders. A wonderful score...

Although I'm aware that Twilight Time vets the masters provided to them, and does their best to give us quality, I felt as though I may have entered an alternate universe upon popping the new Blu-ray of Stanley Kramer's great Inherit the Wind into my Oppo.

Make no mistake, this is...
