I hope so, too. Is your DVR a stand alone unit that you could use to create a backup, or tied to a service like ours is with U-Verse? I had many older titles not on disc dating back to about 2011 when about 18 months ago, I turned on the box to find every title wiped out, not one recorded...

Apparently so, but it’s not even available yet, so why not just say so? I try to follow new releases fairly closely, though I’ve curtailed purchasing because there aren’t that many titles I’m after and for what I have there’s never enough time to watch them all. But I’m glad to pay attention to...

Thanks for posting that link; I hadn’t checked that site in a couple of weeks, so might’ve missed it. It is irritating, though, with the too cute referencing the studios (which are obvious anyway) with thinly veiled name changes, and then mentioning titles with shortcomings or errors without...

Excellent news about King Solomon’s Mines! I’ve looked forward to a pristine version of this fine adventure film, with a great cast and beautiful authentic locale photography (while some seemingly was in Carlsbad and of course Hollywood - ah, movie magic!). I’ll be getting this on order ASAP.

I’ve only caught the 1929 Jeanne Eagels version once, and though the print was in somewhat rough condition, the rawness and desperation she exudes as Leslie Crosbie are quite extraordinary. The Bette Davis/William Wyler version is certainly quite fine and more polished, but the earlier iteration...

I’m afraid everyone is skittish, and justifiably so, about sudden wielding of corporate axes without prior notice. I don’t understand the neglect of good public relations that can carry forward with fans and customers during lean times. It costs practically nothing to release information of...

Which is why I surmised Preminger films could be a breed apart from the studio of original release, and it doesn’t surprise me. I’m all in for The Cardinal upgrade, especially if it includes remastered audio for the wonderful Jerome Moross score. Edit: It indeed is a Warner DVD release.

The Cardinal (1963) was a Columbia release, so unless there’s something that separates Otto Preminger films’ rights, it would be up to Sony to remaster and release it. I would be glad for it, also, but the DVD is quite presentable thankfully.

You’re in for a treat. My last copy of Rancho Notorious was a washed out laserdisc, but since that was the best version available at the time I acquired it. This should prove to be a substantial upgrade, and it has a rather unique atmosphere unlike most any western of the time (or since). Please...

Has there been any information on the technical aspects of the upcoming release of Rancho Notorious? Is it a new scan hopefully, and are there any supplements offered regarding either Marlene Dietrich or director Fritz Lang?

The showing of Knights of the Round Table last week on TCM looked just awful. Muted and smeared, it’s in dire need of remastering, particularly of historical importance as MGM’s first film in CinemaScope. I bailed I’m afraid, so have never seen the entirety.

I certainly agree with your assessment that some of the titles released beg the question why some of the premium titles languish without a release of any kind. I’m entirely happy some more obscure titles are being made available, they may well be on some people’s personal favorite list, but it’s...

I was replying from my phone and somehow my reply got stuck in with the quote, and I couldn’t seem to be able to edit it back out, sorry. IMDb indicates the initial cut was 103 minutes (under Alternate Versions), but released at 96; it mentions additional footage with Marjorie Main, some of...

I’ve seen Amazon listings for preorder that don’t seem to necessarily relate to films actually in the pipeline or announcements made or about to be made by whichever releasing company. I’d also appreciate a remastering of Quo Vadis; the Blu-ray isn’t bad but it’s dated by now and could be much better I have no doubt. Films with epic production values tend to benefit greatly with updated scans. The only time I saw this in a theater oddly enough was in Zurich in 1978, and they...

I recall seeing Ramona on the old RCA 21” color tube set and it was mainly browns and greens, and that was back when color sets were just becoming widely available to the middle class, and everyone turned the color adjustment up a little too high in the first place. Would like to see it...

I am with you in disagreeing with many of Agee’s reviews, but he was a fine writer who wrote cleverly from his own perspective. Much the same, I’ve always loved reading Pauline Kael, but quite often disagreed with the harshness and vitriolic tone. She called Random Harvest a “hunk of twaddle,”...

I read and thoroughly enjoyed Agee on Film, but in this case he was more interested in creating a droll turn of the phrase than giving this particular romantic idyll any benefit of the doubt. Not to everyone’s taste, to be sure, but I find it absolutely charming and beautifully underplayed by...

It’s why I’ve gone back to watching the old DVD copies we have, because the video and audio quality isn’t bad, and it wasn’t like the Blu-ray was a significant upgrade anyway.
