Thanks for the heads-up from Robert and you! I have now ordered these two blu-rays. It is a treat to be able to watch great films, which aren't listed on Rotten Tomatoes, or in my guide books, and have not received much publicity upon their release. I have another film called The Beast Must Die...
Of all the films listed on Beaver's poll, the most intriguing one to me is this Argentinian film noir from 1956, lost for decades and restored from a private collector's film print by the Film Noir Foundation and UCLA Film & Television Archive. There are virtually no reviews or discussions of it...
StudioCanal released this in the UK in 2019 with a nicely restored print and transfer - I'm assuming the Kino Lorber version uses the same master. Joseph Losey's The Servant was my pick for best release of 2021. StudioCanal spared nothing on that one.
I found The Bank Dick and It's a Gift hilarious. I hadn't seen any W.C. Fields films before these releases were reviewed on this forum. It's taken a lot longer for W.C. Fields to get decent blu-ray releases, like the Marx Brothers, Chaplin and Keaton.
This was another stunning Technicolor restoration - I'd never seen the film before, but purchased after a lot of recommendations on this forum! I loved it!
I managed to find a seller on eBay who sold me a copy. So next weekend, I will be able to check out The Naked Spur and see it for myself. I really can't figure out why certain Warner Archive titles will not ship overseas from Amazon!
You wrote a great review of this over on The Digital Bits last summer. I hesitated about purchasing the film because of the very poor video quality - I simply can't watch very lo-rez films projected, e.g. Spike Lee's Bamboozled. I saw the film when it was originally released theatrically and...
Beaver has published the results of their annual poll. There really is an incredibly diverse and rich choice of cinema being published on physical media! I'm certainly looking forward to awaiting what will be released in 2022!
The Wong Kar Wai box set contains seven films, of which four are vast improvements on previous blu-ray releases. The packaging is also exquisite. One of my all-time favourite movies ever made, In The Mood For Love, was ruined for me (and quite a few others) by the director's inexplicable choice...
Network did such great releases a couple of years ago with their Monty Python Flying Circus sets. They also released the greatest TV series ever made, the complete Up series (7-63 UP), on blu-ray the same year. I haven't purchased any titles from them this year. But they certainly have a quality...
That's a good heads-up. What a pity the current pandemic has made ordering from Australia so difficult. It would be great if it were possible to redo Wake In Fright with modern technology and see if it was possible to get a picture that was watchable.
Yes - those are really reference quality. Sony's UHD releases are outstanding - I'm confident that the video masters couldn't be better reproduced. Warner has upped the game too with their UHD releases. I was watching The Outsiders - The Complete Novel yesterday. It is a beautiful transfer of an...
Severin's shipping is very random. But I guarantee it's well worth the wait. I was pleasantly surprised by the design and size of the box. Not as difficult removing the discs from the box set as from Criterion's Citizen Kane UHD!
You purchase a lot of physical media Jose - what are your...
Warner Archive blu-rays are always superb, transfer-wise. For some reason, some of their titles are impossible to obtain via Amazon.com, as they don't ship overseas. This was the case with The Naked Spur and I have so far been unable to obtain a copy of this western, which is one of my...
I went over to The Beaver to post my selections for his poll and made an assessment of what I've purchased this last year. I couldn't believe I'd purchased over 200 blu-ray and 4K UHD titles, but apparently I have. I thought I'd copy what I sent, just for fun.
