HTF REIVEW: Mary Poppins 40th Anniversary SE - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Likewise I got the two-disc set after someone posted about it. I've only listened to the score disc so one more disc still to go but I was very happy with the audio. I wish they had included Bert's rhyming segment in the park. When Bert starts singing about the wind shift ... just a terrific...

HTF REIVEW: Mary Poppins 40th Anniversary SE - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Ken, Fine. But this thread is addressing the DVD presentation of the film. Peter presents what the older Gold edition used of the print which is much wider than the new version and yet is still cropped on both sides. So, why did we lose image in this release?

HTF REIVEW: Mary Poppins 40th Anniversary SE - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Peter, I wondered about Steve's statement of the image not being "excessively" cropped so I took another look at the image you posted. I measured the film image you posted (measured on my screen) at 145 mm by 83 mm or 1.747:1 which supports 1.75:1 being spot on. So for starters it appears...

HTF REIVEW: Mary Poppins 40th Anniversary SE - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Peter, Thanks for that. Very interesting comparison. Are you planning to show the print at the Lafayette? Are you close to announcing your Spring (special) Shows? :) I'd also be interested if you have any thoughts on the audio as presented on film versus the "original audio" on the new...

HTF REIVEW: Mary Poppins 40th Anniversary SE - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Yes Ernest, the unedited version made it to our e-mail .. Just having some fun with you. :) I agree with Patrick's point. If they can't get the high profile DVDs correct why do we think they (on a DVD by DVD basis) can get anything right? If they can't even get Cold Mountain to look (as we...

HTF REIVEW: Mary Poppins 40th Anniversary SE - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Here's what I just did for a test. I turned off all the speakers except for the center speaker. I played the 'step in time' section in a variety of modes including normal Dolby ProLogic, enchanced prologic and other enhanced modes. No mode setting had any effect on the center speaker. When...

HTF REIVEW: Mary Poppins 40th Anniversary SE - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

David, When you say "ambient information" what ambient information was in the original film? All, I'm thinking the problem is how they did the "enhanced mix" (or didn't do it) then the reality of lost bytes for a better picture. After all, Lord of the Rings is delivering 7 audio tracks...

HTF REIVEW: Mary Poppins 40th Anniversary SE - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

I'll take it a step further. The "original theatrical" mix sounded bad to my ears as well. So much so that I really wonder how "original" that audio really is. I was checking out the "enhanced 5.1" mix to see what all the fuss was about and I went back and forth between the different audio...

HTF REIVEW: Mary Poppins 40th Anniversary SE - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

David, Thanks for the review. I read it with much interest. Regarding Mr. Rister's comments (which I had not read previously): Terrific insights! I was thinking about the matte paintings and painted backgrounds in Mary Poppins over the last week or so. I think that the beauty of the...
