I watched TDBN tonight and it was great. Such an entertaining film with great performances and Raoul Walsh had such a great touch (and a weak spot for Alan Hale being a ham.) The transfer, from the original nitrate negative, is simply breathtaking. Thank you WAC!
So glad that I am not alone. It’s intense ! And yes, subtitles would help. This is a really good piece on it from an excellent site.

Here’s an MGM title I’d like to see on blu ray and the acting, directing, cinematography deserve it: Sidney Lumet’s THE HILL starring Sean Connery, Ossie Davis and a slew of other great character actors. Ahead of its time and still relevant.
I don’t think that is true. 3 Godfathers is a 3 strip technicolor recombination - that’s three times the scans and restoration. I think they do a pretty good job of trying to please a lot of fans w widely divergent tastes. There have been months where the releases totally miss the mark for me...
They probably had a choice---High Sierra is a bit historically more important and critically revered than TLBN and probably has broader appeal. There's more to say about High Sierra supplement wise, and it ranks pretty high in the Walsh canon. Personally, I would love to see Criterion release...
Fine have it your way. I just thought it was a way to hone the conversation or else it becomes a free for all ... Criterion's curation skills at the iconic and 100% WB is what interests me (and Criterion obviously.)
Those are MGM titles - let's stick w titles released by WB itself. I AM A FUGITIVE.. seems that like a good Criterion mix of artistic value /social commentary / director / star....They would do a great cover for it....
The more interesting question is what is the next big iconic classic WB title that Criterion will announce? We've got The Roaring Twenties, High Sierra, Mildred Pierce, The Breaking Point. Thinking they will go with one of the iconic directors and stars but not a mega seller for WB itself...
Maybe "legal issues" is a polite euphemism for the extremely dim commercial prospects of a show no one remembers because it lasted less than 13 episodes before it was taken off the air. This is hardly a case like Freaks and Geeks - which lasted one season but was a huge critical success with a...
I would differentiate between releasing specific titles in celebration of the 100th anniversary of MGM and WBD celebrating MGM's 100th anniversary. I mean apart from an event on the lot, a press release or 2, a trailer, and a few nice 4k releases, what did WBD do for it's 100th ? There would...
Im assuming they are in the same little blue standard blu ray case that all WAC blu rays come in. That size is approx. 5 1/4" x6 3/4" - the printed cover is 10 9/16" x 5 7/8" (i measured that precisely. I have time on my hands
obviously.)
Air Force was on TCM today and the transfer looked really good. Not as impressive as Ford's They Were Expendable (which played later) - but that's John Ford with cinematographer Joseph August and that means visual poetry.
Yes! Support the vendors/labels that are still putting out great titles. Take advantage of the frequent sales. Stop crying that some obscure title from the 1930's that TCM would show at 4am on a Wednesday night isn't being released by WAC. Be grateful for what is available and not angry about...
