Stanley Baker may not be the most beautiful of the Greeks, but playing the role as a psychopath was very clever and made the character work.
You have to know about his relationship with Patroclus and its there if you look for it which is much more than Petersen manged in his Troy...
I don't think the year of release makes a difference to how revenue is calculated.
Ben Hur made very little in the year of its release!
In addition to the revenue cited above, there is of course, foreign earnings , by rule of thumb, the same for North America.
All good reasons why Cid was...
I don't think so.
Certainly in the UK ,K of K managed only about 5-4 months as a road show at the Coliseum in London and then went quickly into general release.
Cid on the other hand ran about 2 1/2 years at the Metropole before transferring to the Odeon Haymarket.
Much more successful.
I think El Cid especially,as its reputation has suffered with the absence of a decent BD.
For me it is probably the best epic of its generation but difficult to justify with the present BD mess.
If you have only seen the terrible French BD, then it is not surprised that you didn't think much of it.
If you had seen it in Technirama70, you would understand while many hold it in high regard.
Let's hope we get a decent transfer before too long.
Would love Pharaoh which I can still recall from one viewing in the early 70's.
But a boxed set with all the other titles...........and what about subtitles.
I 'll have to pass.
I have the US DVD Paul and it is stereo. It is described as 4.0 discrete stereo and surprise it is. It may not have directional dialogue but it has a very spread with plenty of discrete sound.
Don't remember an Overture but do an Entr'acte but not on this disc. Soundtrack lp was always mono I...
Either aspect ratio is "right". The neg was 2.35 with the side shaved off to give 2.20 for 70mm. This kept the height the same in both formats.
As with Spartacus you can argue that as it was conceived for 70mm release that 2.20:1 is correct or that you should see the complete neg so it should...
:D
Well they washed out all the colours except brown!! :D
Only ever saw a 70mm once after the premier in London but can still recall the vivid colours when the camera soars up from the dark cells beneath to the open square with Pilate and his guard, etc.
Perhaps one day I will be able to...
Expect you are right Oliver. Never seen the Big Fisherman and all the reviews(and indeed boxoffice) were pretty dire.
However as a large format film would buy it in an instant.
One area where the reviews agreed is that the photography of Lee Garmes which was outstanding. He went to great...
Yes the second half is quite choppy. Mankiewicz had been able to rewrite the script for the first half but didn't have the time to sort out the second.
I like Zanuck's comment after seeing the rough cut in Paris "If any woman treated me like that, I'll chop off her balls"
The sound is 2 track stereo which nicely "pro logics" into surround.
First half is really good although Burton is miscast. March is an excellent Philip though.
