Wasn't the script totally different to the novel in that it was in linear order?
I think the first time author committed suicide well before production of the film caused by, it is said, of being unable
to face up to fame and the high expectations for a second book.
Peter where did you see Zulu in 70?
The UK release was 35 mm only.
About a year after the UK release a 70 print was made for,of all places, South Africa and the Cinerama Theatre in Cape Town.
Ironic perhaps as Mike Todd was at the time married to her and it was his success with 80 Days that impacted on the release of Raintree. The then most talked about couple made many trips to 80 Days premieres giving the film tremendous publicity.
It was one of the rushes of a sequence inside the Temple set.
Not sure whether it was corrected or not, Oliver.
Possibly it was,as it was given to me by the projectionist at the Casino Cinerama.
It was sent to them to help them install their single lens setup for when HTWWW finished.
Would make...
It was after Esther had been given her freedom and announced her marriage.
I think it was a toast to her future. The sound had been erased and rerecorded for channel identification.
Nothing really remarkable.
If only Oliver, if only!!!
I did have lots of Todd AO clips but stupidly send them to the U.S for a special edition of "The Perfect Vision" magazine which some may remember.
Never saw them again.
Sorry Oliver but the frame will be somewhere in our garage with tons of stuff from our move here several years ago.
With it ,is a deleted scene from Ben Hur and one of the rushes from Greatest Story-all in 70.
We are due for a clear up so will keep my eyes out for it.
The last time I saw Raintree in 16mm was about 45 years ago and it was the first time I had seen it.
Sorry Andy, can't recall but I suspect it would be the general release version.
The Camera 65 logo was on 16mm prints and I have a frame of it somewhere.
Shame it disappeared on video.
As for 2.55 :1 Raintree prints, you are right about that format was being superceded by 2:33:1 by "57,
However I thought some of the Ben Hur 35mm Mag prints were printed with larger...
Fall was a secular epic with only one very oblique reference to Christianity. There was nothing to remove.
I always wish that Gladiator had Fall's sets and costumes and Fall had Gladiator's script and actors!
Now that would be an epic !!
And where there were, they were busy with 80 Days.
Shame it was never reissued at a later date, especially in the late 60's, when MGM was busy making 70 mm prints of Julius Caesar and 7 Brides, etc.
Not a huge hit but did reasonable business in theatres that introduced Todd AO with it.
For Its roadshow release in Hollywood Can Can was booked in at the Cathay Circle for a year but it only managed a few months I believe.
These ads come from a time when "Cinerama " product had dried up and they were searching for something to show at the Casino.
I saw them all there (but not The Last Valley rerun) and the full screen and lens was used.
Interestingly ,when Patton opened there and was advertised as D-150, the...
I didn't see it Oliver, but it was onTCM here so it would be the same print as when it was shown in the U.S on that channel.
As I said, I've seen the film since it was issued on Laser, but the CD's of the score are often in my player. One of the great scores!!
I have never seen Raintree in 35mm,only 16mm Scope and Laser and, while enjoying the spectacle, it seemed to me, dramatically somewhat dead, to say the least.
A few weeks ago, it was shown on a pay TV channel here and was reviewed in the Sydney Morning Herald. He was a relatively new reviewer...
