Many folks secretly like to see somebody high perched (ie. experts, etc ...) being taken down several notches or outright destroyed/disgraced.
A "nobody" is not as exciting to watch being torn to pieces. :)
Another big reason for hiring an expert/consultant for any project, is to have a "fall guy" for any problems.
:)
They can't use internet message boards nor unpaid self-styled "experts" as a fall-guy.
If there are no experts as a part of market research groups, would things like "wrong" opening themes, closing credits, closing logos, music, etc ... be noticed at all? (ie. Stuff which the hardcore folks would be nitpicking about).
I'm sure many of us would do it for free.
The problem is very few hardcore fans have any track record, which can be put on a resume as "expertise" or "job experience".
The biggest problem is figuring out which self-styled "experts" with no track record, are actually legitimate experts and not...
This would involve hiring people who have that knowledge either on contract or salary. Such individuals are not always easy to find.
The question is how much the contract/salary would cost to hire a certified "expert", compared to the costs of the backend headaches they would have to deal with.
(More generally).
Nelson makes a very good point here.
For many tv on bluray titles (and some dvd ones too), most likely the primary customers are the hardcore crowd.
I have to wonder if other movie companies are reluctant or don't bother releasing tv on bluray stuff, is secondarily due to...
Also as a general CYA ("cover your ass") measure, to minimize current or future criticism. Or at least until the first batch of bluray sets are sold out.
This is probably not meant for older folks.
Such disclaimers are more likely for younger folks who don't have any sense of history. Younger folks who either don't read and/or never learned anything historical in school.
