How do we know it's Lowry's fault? According to Star Wars Insider, the HiDef transfers were re-color timed and tweaked before going to Lowry. So it could be that the errors occured prior to Lowry.
What happened is they took the transfers from a new HIDEF transfer from the negative, re-color timed and tweaked each movies look, then ran them through the Lowery digital "restoration" process and cleaned them up. No other version of star wars went through that kind of treatment. Unfortunatly...
For me, it's not so much about preservation, as I have three copies of the Faces LD set, a Pioneer HLD-X9 LD player and an Elite CLD79 as a backup. I just cringe when I see and hear many of the changes. The new changes to Bobba Fett's voice just make me cringe, and in the new emperor scene, he...
Thanks for the info Tim. I may try to pick up the definitive if I can get it cheap. It bothers me that some of them have a little bit of Empire missing and the set has been known to show signs of laser-rot. For me, the 30 minute side breaks are a little much for a slight gain in picture quality...
I've never seen the definitive edition, but I've read that they are the same transfer. The difference is that the definitive is in CAV which is 30 minutes per side, and the Faces set is CLV, which is an hour per side.
I find that this varies greatly depending on how good your LD player is. Most playes don't do blacks very well. I had a Pioneer Elite CLD79 that did a really good job with the Faces set. I was very happy with them. I now have a Pioneer HLD-X9 and have the 79 as a backup player. Viewing the faces...
I would think on TV they were. I'll check the dvd's against my LD when I get them. My LD player has a feature to properly set the black level to NTSC specs. It's nice to watch star wars on laserdisc and space is actually black. It will be a very interesting comparison.
As there should be. I'm very anxious to see them, but no matter how good they look, the lasers will remain my main version. I use an HLD-X9 ld player. My previous player was an Elite CLD79. The difference with the 1995 Faces lasers between the CLD79 and the HLD-X9 is a night and day difference...
What kind of setup are you watching them on? Laserdisc can look pretty darn good with the right setup. They will not equal the DVD of course, but on my setup they are easily watchable.
I'm in the camp that I will purchase and can enjoy the DVD releases. I'm especially looking forward to the documentaries and trailers. However, I will always see them as being inferior versions of the film. I base my enjoyment on the film itself rather than the quality of the presentation. So...
