Something that most people here seem to forget or are unaware of:
In the old days, release prints were struck from the camera negative. It doesn't take an Einstein to figure out that the elements for a big hit would ipso facto be in far worse shape than that of a then-minor silent that opened...
Oh, f'gawdsake, when I said "new" I clearly meant titles not previously released on disc!
I may be ignorant, but at least I understand the meaning of words when I read them.
Oh, for corn's sake, people. The GOP may have gelded the Federal Trade Commission, but they still have enough power left to prevent a WB/U merger, which would create an absolutely colossal monopoly. Frankly, I'm surprised they allowed Disney to buy Fox, but this would be completely over the...
I never said they should be released on Blu. They could certainly put these out on MOD-DVD. As I said, the masters used on TCM look fine, and no one expects "gorgeous" for titles that are lucky to have survived at all.
Well, for starters, Ford's last feature, SEVEN WOMEN, and the two non-horror Val Lewtons. (I understand there may be some element issues on the latter, as there are on RAINTREE COUNTY.) I also wouldn't mind a box set of the wonderful "Passing Parade" shorts, some of which already air on TCM. And...
No, I meant "new" as in never before released, specifically from the '30s and '40s, which seem to be the least represented talkie decade; WA is still sitting on a ton of titles that never even made it to VHS.
Not sure if it's already been mentioned, but next year is MGM's 100th anniversary, so WB should be holding those back and not stuffing them into Warner boxes...unless of course they WANT to make people buy SINGIN' IN THE RAIN and THE WIZARD OF OZ for the 40 millionth time.
As I explained on the 77SS thread, the WB detective series all used popular songs by legendary songwriters; Connie Stevens sang in almost every episode of HAWAIIAN EYE, and 77SS often featured the Frankie Ortega Trio performing tunes at Dino's, as well as pop standards as underscoring...
Well, that's why I said DVD and not Blu-Ray. I'm well aware a lot of these pictures are unworthy of Blu, but MODs don't cost an awful lot to manufacture, and a programmer like, say, CRIME BY NIGHT (a picture I quite like), doesn't need the higher format for me (and presumably others) to buy it.
So am I the last person left on HTF who wants some "new" titles, released, even if they're just on DVD, or is everyone now just completely focused on upgrading stuff they already have?
You guys are all whining about upgrades of films you already own, while I'm sitting here waiting for "new" titles that haven't even been released on DVD. Let's have some perspective here, folks.
TCM shows a number of 50s and even 60s and 70s films full-frame. I assume they're simply running whatever they've been given. Doesn't particularly bother me.
Once when I was at Sony, I was having lunch with someone in Home Entertainment, and I asked him why we weren't putting out more classics on DVD. He looked me in the eye and said, "Because HUDSON HAWK sold 600,000 copies and ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS only 1500." And that was 15 years ago!
And that...
Indeed. I recently rewatched it on TCM, and it's clear there might have been a good movie in there, but someone gutted it. After having the same thing happen to him on ON A CLEAR DAY, I don't blame Minnelli for throwing up his hands and retiring.
