That looks like the copy I have. I read it once and liked it very much. Very clever how the author takes one day in the life of our hero (4 July 1876) and weaves in and out of that day to tell his past history. Much, much richer than the film.
Andy, you should be named Ambassador for the Restoration of Raintree County! Would that your box set dream come true! What a marvelous quintet of titles of the best of the best of La Taylor! Lots of exclamation points, but your post deserves them.
(Now, as a Canadian, do you say ass or arse?)
Was there ever a lovelier child in the movies than Elizabeth in National Velvet? (And I mean this in the healthiest way possible.)
And were there ever lovelier close-ups of Elizabeth than those of herself alone or in tandem with Clift in A Place in the Sun? What ravishing creatures!
I don't think TCM has ever shown Raintree in HD, probably because there is no HD master (or, at least, one available to it). I've seen other films in HD in TCM, but never Raintree.
I've been regularly checking TCM's broadcasts of Raintree County in the hope that it will finally show the uncut version. Alas, it hasn't happened in quite a while. So be forewarned and don't expect the Grail.
And unedited as well. It was truly special. OK, not the greatest movie ever made, but certainly not worthy of oblivion or scorn. It deserves a restoration and a BD release, if only to appease Andrew Budgell.
I read Raintree County during a religious retreat. As I stated earlier, I was a precocious, bilingual kid, and I managed to disguise the unabridged paperback to look like a missal. So while everybody else prayed and meditated, I spent time with the denizens of Raintree County. I loved the book...
Sorry that I started a debate, and I've since been corrected, over the gauge of the original release prints of Raintree County. Well, how could a precocious lad of 7 know that he was being lied to by the studio and that Camera 65 meant nothing special for this release? At least it proves that I...
International release, not domestic? Just wondering. As I said, I was a mere child, but I remember the ads and the Camera 65 was prominent in them. It played the same theater that had been fitted for all the big TODD-AO and 70mm presentations.
I saw many prints in Puerto Rico that were radically...
OK. I was a mere child of 7 or 8, but I did see Raintree County in its full glory when it played in Puerto Rico. The roadshow version released there was, not only complete, but also the Camera 65 version, which I believe, was never released in the USA. I remember loving it, although I did not...
I saw Raintree County during its original roadshow presentation in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Impressive presentation and, I believe, shown in its original 70mm stereo format. I think this was only done for international showings. It's a long, lumbering, fascinating movie. A new generation of film...
