Jeffrey Katzenberg says that Spielberg is not trying to block Netflix films from the Oscars.

“I talked to Steven about this yesterday. I asked him very specifically,” Katzenberg said during the panel. He...
I have a feeling that they would have put it on the smallest screen in LA for one week and then wait three months so it would have had a smaller theatrical release. They want to make everyone pay for their service to see the film.
And keep in mind that the theater around here that play Netflix films has the smallest screens in the area and only 2k projection but at least it is the local theater most likely to be in focus.
So my projector that is in focus and reference quality sound isn't as good as the out of focus projection and audio with low sound levels that I frequently get in theaters?
If films should only be judged as worthy for Academy Awards on the big screen then studios sending screeners should not be allowed. Also at this time Home Theaters can be advanced enough that image quality, sound quality, and screen viewing angles can easily match those obtained at most cinemas.
Requiring a wide release would completely destroy the field for Best Foreign Language Film. I think Roma actually had at least as many theaters playing it as any other films nominated in that category.
For those wondering, Never Look Away was wonderful.

I'm about to go see Never Look Away after which I would have seen everything except for Documentary Shorts, A few documentaries, and one Animated feature. I will post my picks when I get home.
Never Look Away is finally opening near me this Friday so I will be able to finish watching all the nominees for Foreign Language and Cinematography.
I'm watching Shoplifters right now.
I just checked the iTunes release schedule and a package of all live action and animated shorts with the exception of Bao will be available tomorrow for $9.99.
The live action and animated shorts will be available as a package for purchase from iTunes and other stores a couple of weeks after the awards with the likely exclusion of Disney's entry in the animated category.
I'll put it this way, I just got back from seeing Capernaum which has a plot description of:
"Capernaum (“Chaos”) is a new film by Nadine Labaki about the journey of a clever, gutsy 12-year-old boy, Zain, who survives the dangers of the city streets by his wits. He flees his parents and to...
That is almost exactly what I wrote when I got back from seeing them at the same theater last Monday. And to answer your question, there is usually a couple that are either comedies or inspirational.
The biggest problem with cutting just certain songs from the broadcast is that it gave some nominees a bigger stage than others. It would work better if they either showed none of the songs or if they performed the songs during commercials and broadcast the winning song once the award was...
I definitely agree that a bump in the ratings would be due to films being nominated that people have actually seen. Get rid of stupid stunts like the Wrinkle in Time thing and maybe trim one of the large number of montages and you could broadcast all the categories.
I just got back from a screening of all 5 nominees for best live action short. The academy picked some very very dark films this year. Most years they pick at least one that is either comedy or uplifting. None of that this year. My ranking in order of enjoyment from them are:
1. Mother
2...
