Where do you think cinema goes from here?

I think QT's idea of waves is very correct but I think his view of now as the 80's Part Two isn't entirely accurate because things aren't that bad thanks to better access to all types of films via home video & streaming and different kinds of filmmakers having more of a chance today. That being...

Where do you think cinema goes from here?

Creator of The Sopranos/genius/all-around curmudgeon David Chase gives his thoughts semi-related to the topic. I agree with most of his points but I think everyone can understand his frustration when he wants to make a theatrical feature out of his TV show and he's hired to do that and then it...

I get his and many fans' desire to see those characters together again but they already made the movies where those characters had adventures together. This was a new set of movies focused on other characters. The biggest criticism of The Force Awakens was that it wasn't original (and I'm...

Where do you think cinema goes from here?

Full disclosure: I've hated that dickhead for decades now so clearly I'm biased. He was editor or a writer at Film Threat magazine back in the 90's and he was basically the stereotypical obnoxious indie rock guy who hates everything popular because he wants to be shocking or an...

Where do you think cinema goes from here?

I think the smartest thing that chain theaters have done over the past 5-ish years is to focus on seating comfort and serving more than just popcorn and candy because based on my anecdotal experience, there are always more people at theaters that have nicer seating. And given that all the chain...

Where do you think cinema goes from here?

I've never been accused of being an optimist but some point in time that someone sees as a golden age was the nadir for someone else so it's an argument that I just don't buy into. That being said, I do think that studios today are so focused on franchises that it's going to result in some...

Where do you think cinema goes from here?

It's a great joke but it also will likely be true. What else would you call a two hundred year old song?

Where do you think cinema goes from here?

You might not be getting anything out of superhero movies but millions of people do. People LOVE those movies, share them with their families, they discuss and rewatch their favorites, and will continue to have memories of them that are as fond as any that you have for your most beloved movie...

Where do you think cinema goes from here?

I think you could say that same basic thing at any point in time though. A mainstream audience doesn't really care about anything other than the hits. It's the film fans that pass on the good smaller movies to future fans.

Where do you think cinema goes from here?

I think it's everyone now and not just one generation. The people have overwhelmingly spoken and they've decided that they want the same thing over and over in a slightly different way. Too similar, they complain. Too different, they definitely complain.

Where do you think cinema goes from here?

I don't know if it'd make your list but a movie that most people don't even realize was a (great) comic book is Ghost World. The Marvel movies have an advantage where they don't really need a particular actor. They'll just have a new character become Iron Man or Captain America or Black Widow...

Where do you think cinema goes from here?

Not really related to the topic but I find it notable that they've dropped numbers from most sequels today. I assume they don't want people to notice how many times they've gone to the well. The only Marvel movies to use numbers were the Iron Man sequels and the second movie is probably a decade...

Where do you think cinema goes from here?

Honestly, I think there's a better chance that people will be talking about the Marvel movies in the year 2100 than a movie that would be more than 150 years old by that time. Thanks to the availability of so many things and the mainstream audience's even greater focus on what is new, I'd guess...

Somehow, they didn't realize that Skyfall was a fluke and James Bond movies don't usually earn a billion dollars. The pandemic is only going to make the box office worse for No Time To Die but even if it had come out prior to the pandemic, it wouldn't have made that kind of money.

Where do you think cinema goes from here?

Yeah, there's a not-so-great independent theater near me that's open during the day but the AMC is the closest, best, and "my" theater so I wanna go there. That being said, when I've really wanted to see a movie this summer, I have made the time but I do miss the weekday matinee...

Where do you think cinema goes from here?

It is a smart move but, when I have free time, it's usually during the day so I'm getting screwed.

Where do you think cinema goes from here?

How the hell has James Gunn not seen Jaws in a movie theater? I wasn't alive when it opened and I live in suburban Pennsylvania and I've seen it a dozen times in a theater and most of those were 35mm screenings. If I went to every screening near me, I could have seen it at least 50 times...

Where do you think cinema goes from here?

Yeah, I wouldn't mind that so I could see a movie from a streaming service on a theater screen but I get the feeling that I'd be in the minority.

Where do you think cinema goes from here?

I think the reality is that theaters are going to be less popular but they won't go away. And the pandemic didn't cause that but it's hastened the theaters' decline. Far worse, the pandemic gave the studios the excuse to stab the exhibitors in the back when they're in the worst situation that...
