That's true but Warners is also the studio that seems to be doing the most to kick the theaters when they're down. In my mind, the good doesn't even come close to outweighing the long term bad.

Leaving aside everything relating to the virus, I would give Warners some credit for trying with Tenet but that was Nolan more than WB and as soon as that movie didn't make money, they turned to an idea which will ultimately be devastating to theaters. And if they didn't have streaming, I don't...

Warners would have made at least $1 billion (and, if the movies caught on, maybe $2 billion) with just Tenet and Wonder Woman and instead they made under a quarter of billion, made less than three other studios while releasing two major movies and they also managed to aggravate alot of their...

I'd imagine that the ad campaign has to start for Wonder Woman by mid-November-ish so it's getting close to decision time. And I think that decision will be Summer 2021.

If you're a snob for knowing Julie Andrews, I can't imagine what she'd think of me for what high brow (David Lynch) and lowbrow (Russ Meyer) stuff that I knew about in high school. And yeah, that was definitely a point to take the opportunity to get some new eyes on an 'old' actor which every...

The window of 'old stuff' that kids have given a chance has always been fairly small but I really think it's gotten smaller once DVDs started and certainly today with streaming.

A drama class and the kids doesn't know Julie Andrews? That is depressing. I've never been a big musical guy but I knew those movies and that actor when I was in high school. I guess the constant flood of new stuff was already rendering almost anything older than a decade to be ancient and...

Good point. I honestly forgot about those movies since he's not onscreen. Also, I hope anyone that knows him from those movies doesn't watch Delirious or Raw because he was doing a different style of comedy back in the 80's.

And just for the record, I love Eddie but he hasn't really done much in a couple decades so there's an entire generation that basically has no idea who he is. And that's a shame because he was one of the greatest stand-ups of all time.

I think part of that price tag is Amazon wanting to show that they're a rival to Netflix.

I imagine that $125 million might even be a little high for what I assume is an R rated comedy and a sequel to a movie that's 34 years old and starring a guy no one under 30 knows.

Hocus Pocus is at my local AMC and it is on the biggest screen in the theater (and the biggest one in the area). Considering that The Empire Strikes Back looked to do the best of the movies that played around me last week, maybe it's not so nuts to have Hocus Pocus in the biggest theater.

Yeah, the fogging of my glasses are the only inconvenience that I experience. That and a couple times, I've been places where I see people I know and I've hoped that they wouldn't recognize me due to a mask so I didn't have to talk to them but I've yet to have a mask save me from a...

I agree but that would show a level of long term thinking that I think is missing in alot of the world today. I think they're more concerned with looking at what a movie did right now than how the business will be in a year or two or five.

Absolutely but it needed to make $600 million to turn a profit and that's the kind of ridiculous amount of money that alot of these tentpole movies need to make so if Tenet didn't come close to that kind of money, I can see how studios would be very hesitant to release a movie and risk losing...

I think No Time To Die would do better than Tenet did but not hugely. I think Skyfall was an anomaly that did great but it's not the norm for how Bond movies do in the U.S. so I don't see No Time To Die doing major business. However, if there is a large audience that is just looking for a movie...

Or your job. How could someone explain that they went ahead with a release of a movie that they hope makes hundreds of millions worldwide when they've seen how Tenet did? Even though it's true, "We needed to help theaters" is going to fall on deaf ears especially when I think it's arguable that...

I saw a screening of The Empire Strikes Back that was sold out last night at a large AMC that is kind of a hike from me. The AMC that is close to me has been selling about 15 tickets for Empire and it's the busiest thing I've seen playing there this weekend.

I'd actually argue that if (when?) some chains fold that the remaining theaters will end up playing the same tentpole picture on like 80% of their screens to compensate for the theaters lost and to handle the consumer demand from there being less theaters so that big opening will still be there...

My local AMC is open on the weekends from 2 to 8 (Tenet gets 4 shows and most of the other movies get 3 shows each) and the rest of the week, it's 4:30 to 7:30 (with two shows for every movie). I was afraid that PVOD would kill theaters but the lack of product may do it.

I'm not positive about the specifics in other countries (tough enough to keep up with this country :) ) but I think the English government and most European countries are telling their people to get ready for an impending second wave so things may be shut down again in Europe by November. If...

I agree but it might be even worse financially, if they wait until the spring or summer IF theater chains have started to close up.
  26. TravisR

    2020 At The Boxoffice

At this point, they may want to release No Time To Die in November because if they delay it until spring or whenever, I wonder if some of the theater chains might have failed by then and there will be even less screens to put movies in comparison to the current limit on seating capacity.

I know it's in its third week but Tenet only tripled the gross of an independent religious movie that had little advertising? So much for Warners' fantasy that Tenet would play for a long time. By the time it opens in New York and L.A., it'll be a memory in the minds of the general public so...

Disney is apparently thinking about moving Black Widow. And by "thinking about", I'm sure they mean "will officially announce the date change in a day or two". Also, there's a RUMOR that Soul will go to Disney +. https://deadline.com/2020/09/black-widow-soul-release-date-changes-1234577241/
