Yeah, I guess if you're up for the Effects Oscar (or any effects awards) and you're going against Avatar, you just go and enjoy the ceremony and parties because there's no chance that you'll be winning.
I can only speak to the theaters in my area but HFR screenings were relatively scarce around me. The IMAX screens have HFR but only three theaters (out of eleven) had one 3D screen with HFR. So when the movie first came out, the few HFR theaters only had three HFR shows out of nearly 20...
Are you sure you saw the movie in high frame rate? If you don't notice it, I truly envy you but I'd guess that even most people that love it, can immediately spot it.
I think switching back and forth didn't help matters because, at least for me, it drew even more attention to the HFR. The Hobbits looked horrible but at least they were consistently horrible looking.
I saw this in IMAX for the first time today (second time seeing it) and the movie is wonderful but dear god, I hate HFR. Relatively static shots look amazing but any movement looks fake and makes the shot looks like a video game.
That'd be my guess too. Except for Quaritch and her, aren't all the baddies from this movie dead? They kinda need her back just so they can have some variety of bad guys for the next one.
The lack of competition is because no one else wanted to release a movie against Avatar. If another studio was sure of their chances against Avatar, they could have released a big movie to compete against it but no one did because they knew better. Even Disney could have relatively easily bumped...
I think the idea of fragmentation of the audience is true to a degree but I think the biggest thing will always be the age of the viewer. There's young adults who feel about Harry Potter or the Marvel movies the way that I feel about Jaws or Star Wars because they saw them all over and over as...
Yeah, James Cameron knows he's not Shakespeare and he doesn't care. He's doing, as you said, simple dialogue that can play to almost anyone almost everywhere.
At this point, I'd be flabbergasted if they don't go forward with more of them. They might not give Cameron a blank check (like he got for parts 2 and 3) but he'll at least get the budget that a bigger Marvel movie gets.
So did Fox but they released Alita in 3D which makes me assume that Cameron had a 3D home video release in his contract for Alita. If he had it for that, he may have it for Avatar as well.
Yep. People seem to really like the movie and while it's completely anecdotal, I haven't even seen any negativity on the scum pit of hate and anger that is Twitter. I think it's going to keep making a lot of money through the holidays and when Avatar 3 comes out, the average person will be...
While the company's main mission in the sequel is to colonize the planet, I assume that they're still I guess it's fair to find it odd that it doesn't get mentioned since it was a big part of the last movie but this picture was already over 3 hours.
Can anyone at Fox (and now Disney) have thought that the movie was a safe bet to turn a profit at the box office? I've assumed that when Fox agreed to a budget that insanely large, they had to be playing a longer game of merchandising, theme parks, home video, streaming, more sequels, keeping...
I know the industry has data to support their estimates but that number always seemed unreasonably high to me. This movie's box office prospects are far more of an unknown than a Marvel or Star Wars movie where there's a built-in "I gotta see it!" mentality that could make me think that it'll be...
There were a number of action sequences where I was thinking "This is what you get when a true master of action is making a movie." It's been so long since I've thought that.
Also, that one dude
Not to be the negative internet guy but I don't think so. From what I've seen, theaters are playing about 75% or 80% of their Avatar screens in 3D but the next time that a movie will have that kind of 3D number will almost definitely be Avatar 3.
It makes me think he's awesome because he's a realist, he's pissing away a corporation's money and he's crazy enough to not care if he essentially rubs it in their face.
