That also makes plenty of sense but based on my age, I've heard Shane as a first name for so long that I never really thought about it as being his last name (though it likely is). Also, I've probably seen Shane twice so it's not something I've spent a lot of time thinking about either. :)

I never even thought of it being anything other than his first name but I was a kid in the 80's. In short, you're probably correct.
