Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

I've thought about this too. I realized there's a global archive of movies, TV shows and music backed up that far surpasses on-site studio archives in terms of redundancy. It was illegally formed, but it was formed.

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

This is scary. This is what leads to items being neglected, tossed out or intentionally destroyed, followed by large-scale headshaking that it happened in the first place. The kinds of people who would do this and did in decades past... they still exist.

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

Yes, that's what I meant. Is there a consensus on digital downloads falling under the "streaming" name nowadays? I've seen it mentioned here once or twice before now that I think about it, but AFAIK they're still separate. Certainly in terms of practical delivery they're entirely different.

Josh, here's something to consider. Doesn't entirely negate what you say and doesn't apply to the masses generally, but it's another dimension to this. https://www.austinmonthly.com/the-rise-fall-and-hopeful-rebirth-of-i-luv-video/

That's one reason I also prefer to take the hour or two to rip a BD. On top of controlling the technical settings, I get the extras and commentaries. Streaming isn't even close to replicating that value as a standard practice, and it doesn't look like the format will ever find it worthwhile to...

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

I stopped by my local Best Buy yesterday after reading these recent posts, and their disc section is quite dismal as well. One standard-sized row, single side, and three freestanding displays. Plus another freestander near the front for new releases.

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

I'm sure it's somewhere in this long thread, but many people are of course not debating discs or streaming. With their interests spread out over numerous streamers at $10 per, they've simply returned to pirating. That, sadly, neutralizes the concerns we're discussing on both formats, and for...

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

Waaay back when Blu-ray was fighting the format war with HD-DVD, I clearly remember saying to a close friend (and fellow home video lover) that I wasn't crazy about a new disc that - unlike previous ones - was proprietary tech. BD is Sony, HD-DVD was Toshiba, and I didn't like either one because...

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film-out To my knowledge all the studios do film outs to preserve new work, and the new work they've done restoring old work (films). They just don't make prints for distribution obviously.

I agree with your overall sentiment, but want to challenge you here. Digital is NOT any form of real preservation. Film is the only proven, long-term medium for that purpose. Doesn't matter how much room it takes. Digital is mostly for convenience and, yes, as a backup to film. But it should not...

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

I think the concern is streaming's potential to eventually replace ownership. Cable/OTA was never going to do that.

I think I'll just sit back and wait for Cord Cutting 2.0, the likely result once dozens of streaming services are needed to deliver a balanced diet. Optical media will be the new vinyl.

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

My personal habits are a little different from many others in that I pretty much only buy things I know I'll watch over and over again. So my collection is pretty compact and distilled down just to favorites for the most part. However I disagree with your earlier point about additional...

Totally. I have a Marantz CD6006 and love it. It's only a few years old too, but I feel like a dinosaur when I do my ritual.

Well there can certainly be exceptions. I have a Sony from about 2009 that also plays perfectly fine, but an RCA player from about 2002 died after less than ten years and only moderate use. Also if players do become rare, finding them on the secondary market could be challenging eventually...

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

Disc players age, used or not used, so stockpiling them won't help. Lasers burn out from use, or can't read due to moisture or other environmental conditions, and other pieces age or dry out. They're not as easy to maintain as a VCR, where you can open it up and oil the parts. They have to...

Physical Media might not be dead, but Physical Media in Retail Stores are accelerating the death

I imagine enough people realizing a massive amount of content they like is only on discs they already own, and who need a replacement for their brand player, could someday drive a third-party company into business.

At least he mentioned Oppo. The end of physical media? Hardly. It's not when the discs are no longer made - it's when the players no longer are.

They pretty much all include CD drives still. It's only an issue for new car buyers if they insist on keeping their factory stereo or if there's no option for their car model for some reason.
