Merry Christmas to David and everyone on here! :)
After several years of rather sparse and sporadic Christmas viewings, I really got back into it this year, incorporating a number of 1st (And some 2nd) time viewings with some old longtime favourites, some of which I haven't seen for many years...
Yes, there are a lot of familiar faces for we Canadians who grew up in a certain age that are in this film. I did immediately recognize the actor who would later play the kindly, but stuttering and sometimes absent minded inventor Jasper on the marvelous ROAD TO AVONLEA series, though his name...
Well, this sure explains everything! (And thankfully, NOT posthumous in either case!) :)

CHEERS! :)
Tonight, courtesy of Tubi TV, I enjoyed my first ever full viewing of AN AMERICAN CHRISTMAS CAROL (1979), starring Henry Winkler as Benedict Slade (This is after all, an American adaptation!). Much unlike my faulty memory (I thought it was set in the then contemporary 1970s! OY VEY!!!!) of my...
All I know is something like "Dolby sound for select theaters" was listed near the end of the credits, so it must have got a theatrical release somewhere! I guess the initial TV broadcast does explain the 1:33.1 Aspect Ratio, and perhaps also that it was shot in such a way to accommodate TV...
I don't think I've ever seen the Albert Finney musical version of "A Christmas Carol," but I really need to rectify that this year! :)
What I did see in the old year just passed:
The 1938 version starring Reginald Owen. Leo G. Carroll's performance as Jacob Marley is quite good, as is Barry...
Hi Douglas!
That's too bad, but thank you for sharing your observations regarding the BFI and VCI versions of SCROOGE: A CHRISTMAS CAROL (1951). They are appreciated! :)
CHEERS! :)
Yes, her name is Rebecca! Thank you, Robert!!
Unfortunately, our current limited budget rarely allows for DVD and Blu-ray purchases, these days! :(
In any event, I'm pretty happy with what I have in terms of Alastair Sim's A CHRISTMAS CAROL (1951). Some years ago, I had a ragged...
I'm really thankful for my two copies of the VCI Blu-ray!
As I recall, I ended up with two Blu-ray copies because the first 2 disc set I ordered was supposed to have Lionel Barrymore's Christmas Carol Radio broadcast on the 2nd disc, but it ended up being the DVD version of the main Blu-ray...
Despite the missing 4 words "For reaching it out" and the two brief visual digital anomalies, the 2012 VCI Blu-ray remains my go to for Alastair Sim goodness! In last night's viewing, I didn't even pick up on the first one of the moving floorboard near where Ebenezer Scrooge sat, but I did pick...
Over nine hundred and twenty posts into this thread, it has been deduced that the definitive A CHRISTMAS CAROL (1951): Starring Alastair Sim quite possibly and ironically may not have a single definitive print!
At this point, my next questions are is there any surviving documentation that may...
You do raise a most interesting point that I don't think has ever been previously considered in this thread, Robert. That this definitive A CHRISTMAS CAROL (1951) classic had initial releases in the UK and the U.S., could very well mean there were/are some differences in the UK and U.S. prints...
Apart from four words of missing dialogue (though oddly somewhat audible on the commentary track!) and a couple of very brief visual anomalies, yes!
Apparently, the Renown BFI DVD is missing Scrooge's scream during the appearance of Jacob Marley's ghost! I'm thinking that's probably worse than...
Value Village gets some interesting treasures. I haven't seen a Blockbuster video for sale in ages, let alone a sealed Blockbuster VHS Tape! Good find!!
I think Criterion would be ideal for a proper Blu-ray release of the 2K "A Christmas Carol" BFI Transfer. This would definitely be...
There is also the annoying 4% PAL speedup on DVDs that aren't inherent on Blu-rays, which was another reason I found Renown's cancellation of the Blu-ray release so disappointing!
Therefore, much as I would love to be able to recommend the above Region 2 DVD edition, I just CAN'T!!!! :(
Unfortunately, I'm not surprised Mike. Still disappointing, though.
Thank you very much for checking! I guess the 2012 VCI Blu-ray release will simply have to suffice.
CHEERS! :)
The Mrs and I viewed the annual CTV Presentation of A CHRISTMAS CAROL (1951) earlier this evening.
As many times as I've seen this beloved yuletide classic through the years, there were a couple of things that I hadn't noticed before tonight's viewing. At one point during the Christmas yet to...
I believe that it's largely a your mileage might vary according to your playback device's default settings situation. Thankfully, it is adjustable.
CHEERS! :)
Honestly, having to adjust for the frame rate jerkiness on our Samsung Blu-ray player is a bigger, more relevant issue for me. I know that the 5.1 soundtrack issue matters to some, though.
CHEERS! :)
Of course, TCM's Canadian feed is airing EXECUTIVE SUITE (1954) on the December 1 2019, 8 PM Eastern time slot instead of A CHRISTMAS CAROL (1951). Figures!
My understanding is that the only improvement for the 2012 Blu-ray over the 2011 edition was an 8 second missing audio glitch on the 5.1 soundtrack of the latter was rectified on the former. The 2.0 audio is fine on both editions, apart from the missing "for reaching it out!" dialogue, of...
Thanks for the heads up, Gary! I'll try and PVR this if I can free up enough space with the ton of Hallmark Christmas movies my wife has recorded! :D
CHEERS! :)
