So many great films that were runner ups on my list that werethisclose to getting the top spot that I'm thinking of going back and putting the runner ups in (parentheses) for those years. But then again ... maybe not.

I was surprised to see The Impostors on your list. Honestly, I was beginning to think I was the only person who's ever seen it. I haven't seen it in years but remember enjoying it quite a bit. Time for a revisit. Thanks for taking the time to make up your list.

I was present at a Q&A with the lovely Tippi Hedren (one of the nicest actresses I've met) when someone referred to The Birds as a horror film and she shrieked with shock, "It's not a horror movie!". To be honest, I've never thought of it as a horror film either but hey, that's just me (and...

Other film geeks on other sites (HTF isn't the only one I frequent) and a few in person . Of course, I'm entitled to my opinion but that doesn't stop some people who feel the need to shake their finger at you for not appreciating a film "masterpiece". The irony, of course, is that I don't...

I have a long list of acclaimed and beloved "classics" that I dislike intensely (It's A Wonderful Life, The Grapes Of Wrath, Shadow Of A Doubt, All Quiet On The Western Front, Dr. Strangelove to name just a handful) so I'm simpatico although I think Citizen Kane is a terrific film. Curiously...

Several people have mentioned Schindler's List as a great film that one would never want to sit through again and I feel the same way. It's beautifully done (if slightly manipulative) but it's too painful an experience for me ever to want to go through again. Could I call a movie I never want to...

Well, we like what we like but I'll point out that my list includes 19 foreign films from Argentina, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea and Sweden. That doesn't include British films (which although in the English language are foreign). While there are only 2...

Every time I hear his theme to Chariots Of Fire, I literally have to force myself not to scream . I do like his score to The Bounty though and while I'm not a fan of his music for it, I like Blade Runner.

We all bring our own "baggage" and personal history into these selections. Sometimes a film will take the top spot for reasons other than its quality. Perhaps a film can have a personal meaning to us that it doesn't have with others. Take 1960 (I suspect I'm older than most of you guys ;)) for...

As I said, favorite and best aren't mutually exclusive and very often are one and the same. But, for me, when it came down to a film I loved (favorite) and a film I know is superior cinematically as "art" (best), I went with the favorite.

2019 had three films at the top: Parasite, 1917 and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and I easily could have picked any one of the three for my top spot but I went with my gut.

I quite liked Dunkirk but totally agree with you about Hans Zimmer's score! Easily the worst thing to happen to film music since Vangelis! Apologies to fans of the two gentlemen ;)

Hell Or High Water was a disappointment for me after all the glowing reviews. I'd say why but it references political views which the HTF discourages. It was a great looking movie though thanks to Giles Nuttgens and another solid performance by Jeff Bridges.

Nice list! Great to see another Wind River fan out there! Loved it. It really should have done a lot better than it did. It seemed to slip through the cracks.

I love Mulholland Drive and it was tight between MD and Lagaan for my 2001 pick. Of course I know that as cinema, Mulholland Drive is the superior film. But I had to go with the "favorite" again. Lagaan is unadulterated pleasure from start to finish!

It took me about two days to compile my list. I didn't do it all in one sitting. If you're unsure about what movies were released in what year, Wikipedia is a big help. Just put, say, "1948 in film" in the search engine and it will give you a list of all films released in 1948.

Lots of good stuff on your list. Love your inclusion of Marnie in your 1964 spot. Hitchcock's last masterpiece still has its share of detractors but I prefer it to many of his more popular films.

Thanks, Howie for taking the time and effort to make up your list and a very personal list it is too. I would imagine you raised a few eyebrows with your choice of Paint Your Wagon for 1969's top spot.

The Conversation was so close to being my 1974 pick but I couldn't dismiss Chinatown! Loved that you picked Jackie Brown for your 1997 choice. It's still my favorite Tarantino. I'm amazed by the amount of Tarantino fans who consider it his worst movie!

The Maltese Falcon is perfect. Try as I might I can't find a flaw in it. It may not be the highpoint in cinematic art that Citizen Kane is, I'll grant you that but I've easily watched Maltese twice as much as I have Kane in the past 30 years. No disrespect to Kane which is a bona fide...

I'm a pushover for movies about the Titanic. In my film collection, in addition to the 1997 Cameron film, I have the 1953 film with Stanwyck, the 1943 German version, the British A Night To Remember as well as two from TV, the George C. Scott 1996 and S.O.S. Titanic with David Janssen.

Titanic is the GWTW of disaster movies. Both great fictional love stories told against an epic historical backdrop (the Civil War, the sinking of the Titanic). One either buys into those movie romances or one doesn't. I adore La La Land. As much for its homage to Jacques Demy as to its tip of...
