  1. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

OTOH, I've never seen sets one and two, but saw three and four on the shelves last fall, and have the 10-12 set on the shelf in my collection with the rest of my half season sets.
  2. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

That came out last week. The Wal-Mart epic pak releases seem to be on an October schedule now, IIRC. And, as the complete series set shows, the releases will be split into 13-15, and 16-20. So, Doug, you can wait probably until October 2021 for that final set which you've already bought a...
  3. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

The (20th and) Final Season arrived today, a day earlier than Amazon said it would. My Gunsmoke collection is complete. I'm glad I jumped on buying it from Amazon when I did on Monday morning, because since it's sold out at BB, Target, and Deep Discount, Amazon's jacked the price up to $50...
  4. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

I got an e-mail from Target Monday morning telling me the set would be delayed until, like, May 20th. So, I canceled the order and immediately ordered from Amazon. It's already shipped and scheduled to be here Thursday. There do appear to be stock issues, but not with the big river.
  5. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

And let's not even get into what they transcribed when Miss Kitty was discussing guest character Michael Hunt... ;)
  6. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

This is the kind of stuff I'm interested in seeing eventually, because I believe I've only ever seen Salome Jens in her recurring role in The Rifleman in Space (Star Trek: DS9)
  7. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

Yeah, but think of how much space 34 sets would take up instead. The shelf I have Gunsmoke on is 46 inches wide and the collection now takes up about half of that, and that's with the chunky 10-12, which is only 3 normal cases wide for 6 volumes. Those epic paks cut about half the space needed...
  8. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

Well, that complete series picture kind of guarantees the completion of the chunky sets in time, doesn't it?
  9. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

CBS only released 3 of the movies and farmed the last two out to Kino. Those two are still in print, so I don't forsee a complete movie collection or the movies with the series right now.
  10. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

Well, Law and Order was $700 MSRP for 104 discs, Dark Shadows was $600 MSRP for 131 discs. However, both of those were all new pressings and/or unreleased material while this set is almost certainly stock on hand repackaged. So maybe that'll cut the price.
  11. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

10-12 was released last October, and they've been averaging about a release a year. With the major push to get Gunsmoke complete in the last year, it's only logical that the epic paks haven't gone any further yet. Before that started late last year, there wasn't enough material for a new chunky...
  12. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

See? I knew once I ordered the German version a US release would happen. I wonder what the price on that 143 disc complete series box will be? And, whether the season chunk epic paks will continue through Wal-Mart? Now all we have left to wonder about is Bonanza, but at least ViacomCBS didn't...
  13. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

I've hit my Gunsmoke wall after season 8. Time for a break. Maybe watch The Good Place since it's finally complete, hear some good S20 news soon, and then back to Dodge.
  14. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

Well, considering they haven't put more than two seasons up at a time on All Access in the, what, 5 or 6 years it's been around, I think Disc is still the surest way to see it. I checked... all I saw they currently had was episodes from S1 and 2, but I didn't check to see if they were complete...
  15. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

After a few Quint appearances, I started wondering... did they get Burt in for more action? Chester couldn't provide much physical action because of his in character bad leg, and James Arness couldn't provide much in the way of action because of his real leg and foot issues, but Burt's out...
  16. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

Season 8, in which Stroker Ace strangles Scotty to death (look it up. That's exactly what happened!). I read somewhere that in his last couple seasons, Dennis Weaver kept quitting. I think he's been in two episodes out of 8 early on. Chester is starting to phase himself out. Hell, Quint even...
  17. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

Chesterland: Okay, there's one logical flaw in this episode, at least I feel there is. How many times have we seen an entire family wiped out in the last 6 years? I lost count. In fact, I think the last time was a week before in The Squaw. They weren't legally married, so the hot Indian wife...
  18. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

Well, I sort of fell back into watching the show. Not as much, but a bit. The hourlong episodes... I don't know if they hadn't adjusted to the format or I hadn't, but the first one to really click with me was the latest I watched... S7E5, All That. The one with Buddy Ebsen as the partner of a...
  19. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

I, too, am on a Gunsmoke break between the half hours and B&W hours. Though no oddly pink shirts here, just good old black, white, and grey.
  20. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

Season 6. A new title card in the end credits says "filmed at Paramount Studios". I take it that they moved production locations for this season. I hate new Dodge. It looks wrong. More cramped. There's no daylight anymore. Is this all an interior set now? No sir, I don't like it. Some other...
  21. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

Gunsmoke has an interesting relationship with religion. Matt will be the first one to say some scripture at a decent man's funeral. However, the most obvious religious folk we see are the biggest holy roller hypocrital scumbag assholes you can find. They're generally the type who make you want...
  22. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

Keep 'em if you care about special features. I don't believe the season sets had any commentaries or anything ported over, did they?
  23. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

I remembered that early on, and was able to line up the episodes to watch in their correct order. the missing episode was even the last one on the disc, so it was easy enough to pop S2D1 out, slot in the S4 disc, then go back to S2. Hell, at least they made good. Granted, they did it on the...
  24. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

They actually re-used one along the way. At first, I thought CBS had screwed up or something and put the wrong episode on a disc, but the meat of the episode was new. And I haven't heard any complaints about a wrong opening, so I guess the producers just had a few seconds to fill and re-used a...
  25. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

Well, after a few seasons, here's a rundown of Gunsmoke Tropes! "Let me handle it.", Matt says. The person then immediately takes matters into their own hands and dies. "He gave me no choice.", what Matt says to just about every widow or relative of someone he shot. Long Branch women lead to...
  26. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

Poor Pearl (somewhere in season 2 volume 1) Once again, marrying a Long Branch girl ends in a shooting. And likely a hanging after the fact, but that wasn't shown. The thing that made me post was... well, call me stupid, but I never realized Denver Pyle had a normal voice. All I'd ever heard...
  27. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

Plowing through S1, since it was a rainy day... Random thoughts: The episode where the widow puts a bounty on Matt may have been TV's first drive by shooting,. if I did screencaps, the Christmas episode would've provided a whole riff about Miss Kitty's muff, wink wink, nudge nudge. I presume...
  28. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

A few quick words about S1, Disc one... John Wayne wasn't lying when he called this an "adult" show. 5 episodes in, we have psychopaths, golddigging whores (that's not a misogynistic thing, we all pretty well know Miss Kitty ran a whorehouse and this was one of her girls, and she literally was...
  29. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

Just haven't gotten around to picking up the final two movies yet, or not a fan of them? The CBS-released movies are starting to go OOP, so I grabbed them, and got the Kino-released ones too, since, well, as we've all said, season 20's almost certainly coming next year and it's time to have...
  30. The Obsolete Man

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

I've been thinking about how to watch Gunsmoke. Now, I've seen bits and pieces here and there, enough to know I enjoy the show. But 635 episodes in a row? So, break it up into eras! 6 seasons of half hour, 5 seasons of hourlong B&W, and 9 seasons (most of which are shorter seasons...
