Why I Own So Many Movies.

It's also possible that your local library system may have use for the old DVD's, since some libraries have DVD (and even Blu) collections that people can check out. I've donated some of my old DVD's/CD's that I don't want to the library - and they're always happy to get them.

Yes, it's easy to forget that physical media is typically worth very little these days. The only real exceptions are if you have a rare "collector's item" movie/TV show on Disk that may be of value to a physical media aficionado (like those of us on this board).

Why I Own So Many Movies.

Funny video. I can see owning a lot of DVD's & Blu-ray's. I do, but not nearly as many as these guys. And, most of mine are in plastic binders, which saves on space. If I were these guys, I would be concerned about getting my collection ripped off. That's a lot to lose.

Not to de-rail this thread, but FEP is one of my all-time favorite films, and definitely one of Nicholson's best performances. I re-watched FEP last year, but for the first time on Blu-ray. Incredible film. IMHO Nicholson's best films came out during the late '60's - mid '70's era, i.e.: Easy...

Why I Own So Many Movies.

Going along with my last post, I am not putting all of my Disks into Binders. I'm keeping some of them in the original packaging, and/or modifying the way some of them are packaged. Among others, I'm keeping: -The 2011 Taxi Driver Blu; great cardboard packaging with collectible pictures, etc...

Why I Own So Many Movies.

After thinking about doing this for a while, I recently got a couple of nice Binders and decided to transfer most (but not all) of my DVD/Blu collection to these. Wow. What a huge improvement this makes!! This is a game-changer for me, and I wish I had done this a long time ago. The benefits...

Why I Own So Many Movies.

There's a lot of truth to this. I remember watching some regular DVD's on my old, relatively small CRT TV back in the 200X's (well before I got my HD player) and the PQ was not bad. However, once I upgraded to my much newer, larger, and far superior HD set & watched these exact same DVD's - I...

Why I Own So Many Movies.

Agree 100% - this is exactly the reason I haven't invested in 4K, and never will. I have a 47" HD set that's about 6 years old, and love it. However, while Blu's look great on the set - some of the regular DVD's look just OK - and some look like crap. So, my concern over getting a 4K set was...

Why I Own So Many Movies.

I - and I'm sure other collectors/fans - share your concern. Though, they're still making Blu players & they're still making physical media (Blu/DVD) so I hope it'll be available for a long time to come. That being said, it's obvious that lot less people are buying physical media due to...

Why I Own So Many Movies.

I'm actually not really into the DVD/Blu binder concept either, but was just using it as an example of how someone who had a huge amount of DVD's/Blu's could easily save a lot of space by getting rid of the cases/boxes/etc. - if they so chose. However, I have been known to get rid of the DVD...

Why I Own So Many Movies.

Yes, this is a huge difference between not only the PQ/sound/improved aspect ratio of DVD's/Blu's vs. VHS tapes - but also the physical appearance & space requirements re: DVD/Blu vs. VHS. Whereas VHS tapes were large/bulky/heavy/ugly - and took up a lot of room - DVD's/Blu's are significantly...

Why I Own So Many Movies.

I don't dispute this at all. There are whole articles out there about films that were only on VHS & have still never made it to DVD. However, again, I didn't know people that had huge personal VHS collections that they had purchased - I'm not saying they didn't exist, just that I didn't know...

Why I Own So Many Movies.

Good article. I didn't get my first DVD player until early 2003, and knew a small # of others who still didn't have a DVD player even then - though most of the people I knew had them. So, it makes sense that VHS rentals would have topped DVD rentals in 2002, since IMHO DVD hadn't fully...

Why I Own So Many Movies.

All good points. Yes, I never got much into collecting VHS tapes - nor did anyone I knew at the time. I didn't like the pan & scan format, the bulky aspect of the tapes/the amount of room they took up on a shelf, the tendency that VHS had to get "eaten" by the players, the need to rewind, etc...

Why I Own So Many Movies.

Point taken. However, my point still stands that VHS films/TV shows were never something that the general public purchased to collect - nor did the general public have large collections of commercial (i.e., non taped off TV) VHS films/TV shows. Again, back in the heyday of VHS all the people I...

Why I Own So Many Movies.

Definitely agree with this. I was recently re-watching Sunset Boulevard (1950) on Blu-ray - this older film in particular has an incredible HD print. As I was watching I said to myself that there is no way this film looked as good when it was first released vs. this much more recent Blu...

Why I Own So Many Movies.

I actually never considered VHS affordable to own back when the format was common, i.e. the '80's & '90's. Most people just rented them. The average movie on VHS tape was too expensive for purchase - i.e. some of them were upwards of $50+ (or more). I never knew anyone who had a huge VHS...
