Dave is making a silicon vs silicone joke. Here is mine: Silicon Valley is near San Fransisco, Silicone Valley is in Los Angeles

A few people are calling it the not yet released Apple Silicon iMac as 27" (since that is the size of the current Intel one.). I am willing to bet that you are all incorrect and when it is released, we will see that the screen is appreciably larger: maybe 29", maybe 31". (The low end went from...

Of the non-retina 27"?? I don't think so -- all the retina displays are radically better. That said, yes, wait if possible for the new larger iMac displays. But a friend just "upgraded" from a 15" MacBookPro to the 13" M1 as the larger display M1 MBP still doesn't exist and is very happy at...

Keep in mind that the new 24" M1 Retina is vastly superior to a non-retina 27" iMac... Not saying you shouldn't wait until the 29" or 30" (just a guess) successor to the 27" materializes, but in an emergency, don't hesitate to get the 24" M1. Apple doesn't have an *affordable* monitor for the...

So I had to Wikipedia it, and yes, there were upgrades from the 128K Mac to both the 512K and the Plus. I am quite sure I did the 128K to 512K upgrade (at McGraw Hill bookstore on 6th Ave). I am also sure I did have a Plus, but no firm memory if I upgraded that as well or bought a new one...

Looking forward to it -- specifically the new AppleTV -- very curious what the upgrade will entail.

As an owner of the original 128K Mac (got it in March of 1984) my memory tells me otherwise — the upgrade was from 128K to 512K. The 1MB Mac Plus was a new machine where the floppy went from 400 to 800MB.

It is entirely possible the hottest processors in the Mac Pro are some of the 3rd party GPUs, not the Xeons. And I’ll be amazed if Apple suddenly came up with Apple Silicon GPUs that eliminate the need for external ones for the Mac Pro. Also they could replace some some of those multicore...

I sincerely hope that isn't true -- I badly want the current cheese grater Mac Pro with Apple Silicon (M2 or M3 or M4) processors for the old style cheese grater Mac Pro prices (i.e. starting at $2.5K) see: https://apple-history.com/mac_pro_early_09 The idea being able to upgrade storage over...

Nothing but additional positive words for the new MacBook Air — every software I’ve tried has been faster, better, problem free. The only thing I really strongly prefer on my 2018 MacBook Pro: the touch pad, specifically for click and drag a bunch of already selected files. And the new “good...

The M1 MacBook Air arrived yesterday, in the brief few hours of using it -- it is every bit as wonderful as I hoped it was -- unfortunately it will be primarily my wife's Mac;) good thing I tend to wake up earlier, so I'll get to play with it at least little every day.

Rarely, but it happens -- the original iPhone, went down from $600 to $400. (I had bought it at its original price 2 weeks after it was released -- the only reason I did not get it on day one, we were out of the country on vacation -- and IIRC I got a $100 gift card from Apple when they lowered...

In fairness Bluetooth has been bad since day one. Any new problems are hardly unique to the M1. There is a reason Apple came out with AirPlay and there are any number of Android users upset that they don't get it for their smartphones. And AirPlay is the reason why the AirPods are so wildly...

I have no knowledge obviously (insider or otherwise), but as someone who has followed Daring Fireball for over a decade, and The Talk Show since episode 1 with Gruber and Dan Benjamin, I have a very hard time to believe Apple "buys him off" -- he said plenty of negative things about Apple -- as...

According to all the reviews I’ve read/listened to it takes 10 minutes of concerted effort before the fan/throttling gets kicked in. The chances we (and especially my wife) will hit that limit in any kind of normal/regular use is negligible. The fan going all out on my 2018 MacBook Pro happens...

Ordered a maxed out M1 MacBook Air for my wife. (Delivery forecast Dec. 30th -- hoping it will come much sooner, sooner - "underpromise but overdeliver" and all that). Got an Apple Card right before ordering it to save the 3% and went from beginning to "your card is now active" in under 60...

Yes, exactly this — the thing about servers: the ARM processors use less electricity, and generate less heat (which further reduces the power consumption) and are cheaper to than Intel chips to start with. Ultimately— follow the money — server farm companies will want ARM servers and the server...

One more reason for Apple to bring back the Apple Cinema Display ;) Hopefully, this is the kind of thing that can be fixed via software — I doubt there is a unfixable hardware problem with the Mac

Gruber's review also explains why the extra memory isn't really needed on the M1 Macs https://daringfireball.net/2020/11/the_m1_macs That said from the various reviews I've seen, the only reason to get the M1 MacBook Pro instead of the Air is if you want the Touch Bar (which as a hunt and peck...
