This is a film I’ve always avoided. Why a hit broadway musical with evocative and really funny songs, would be stripped of its score before filming is a complete mystery to me. The story is often the weakest part of a musical. Why choose to concentrate on that aspect only?
In my opinion, at least 3/4 of the enjoyment of Valerian is via 3D. I recently acquired the Hong Kong 3D Blu ray and although I saw the movie in the theatre in 3D, am just finishing watching the disc for the second time back to back. This is something I never do.
Again, I don’t know why anyone...
Cliche — “First World Problem”
I am lucky enough to have a well known classic movie station in both standard def. and HD with my cable company and have copied 1000’s of movies with my DVD-R machines.
My favorite eras for classic movies are from the dawn of the motion picture to 1940. I copy...
I find that every woman I have seen either the play or movie with is reduced to a puddle on the floor by the end of the love stories! My wife who has seen Oklahoma, The King and I, Carousel, State Fair and Flower Drum Song and HATED them all, was charmed by South Pacific, which she found...
I am puzzled by your no-plot reference to South Pacific. It contains two love stories, a strong inditement against prejudice and a WWII mission against the Japanese! What do you consider to be a plot?
Just don’t read the book first. It was on the highschool curriculum and I remember being very disappointed in the changes. Also, it is one of those very “American” movies like “Mr. Smith Goes To Washington”, “1776”, or “Forest Gump” that Americans find wonderful and non Americans are a bit...
There is an excellent set of podcasts called “You Must Remember This” which has an excellent program devoted to her life story. Apparently she was seriously psychologically disturbed and among other things was very concerned about her looks and had surgery after surgery to modify her upper lip...
Too bad it did not give you a choice of audio track. Also, originally these films were shown with narration. I don't remember a narrator option on this disc.
Not to just be a contrarian, but if you are talking about "From the Earth To The Moon" thank goodness this is going out of print. I have the Melies sets, so I am familiar with this short. The Flicker Alley blu ray has the worst music I have ever heard. I borrowed a friend's disc, and it was all...
I see the Western as a uniquely USA experience. The settling of Western Canada was radically different. For many of us North of The Border, and in other areas of the world, the western hero who settled the West before there was any law and order in a "rugged individual" way was not our...
For years I have only purchased DVD cases that hold two discs. I record many movies from TCM which I catagorize and shelve by Star, so I store say two Bette Davis movies which are close together chronologically in the same case and design a cover using posters for each movie from the internet...
When we had the basement finished 4 or 5 years ago, I had two walls fitted with floor to ceiling shelves. I almost filled these up with DVDs, leaving I rack at the end, and the bottom shelve along the floor empty. About half the "empty space" is no longer empty.
I will soon be reaching a crisis!
I have been theorizing this for a while: "Josh" must be a corporate name for a staff of at least a hundred people who,
A) Research what new classic titles are available.
B) shops or orders the movies.
C) watches the movies and takes notes.
D) writes and posts reviews.
E) participates in...
We live in a city of about 500,000. Our public library has a vast collection of Blu Rays and DVDs you can borrow for free with the click of a mouse. They also get almost every movie and TV show season set.
The public library of any large US city must have even better resources. If you reserve...
Actually, it sounds like the best idea is for you to blind buy every movie that looks good to you, and even if you hate some, and throw them away, it probably would be cheaper.
I've talked about this before. Here in Ontario we have a type of Visa card called a "Scene Visa" that racks up points toward free movie tickets. We use this card for everything we buy, (but pay it all off at the end of each month!). I think the program is about 10 years old.
We see all the...
If you get a chance, try suffering through a few minutes of the version with the Italian only soundtrack. This was the only surviving version up until a few years ago. TCM used to show it. The new version is an immense improvement.
I remember most theatres in Windsor Ontario when I was a child always used to advertise and run what was called "continuous" showings meaning that the movies, shorts, cartoons, and trailers never stopped. ("Continuous from 2:00 p.m.). This allowed the house wives to shop downtown, and go see a...
Sometimes it really pays to watch all films in a series back to back. On a whim, I purchased the "Bourne" Blu Ray set in the HMV closing sale. I had seen all the movies in the theatre as they came out. I had no idea as I saw them because of the years between releases, that they are basically...
Don't judge Eddie Cantor by this movie alone. He is at his hilarious best in his 1930's Goldwyn movies (released recently by Warner Archive). I have always thought he equals or surpasses the other great '30s comedians of this era in these films, plus they have really good musical numbers, Busby...
If you check the internet, (I forget where I found it -- sorry), you will find the information on how to meld the music from the two CDs together in movie order. This fits comfortably on 1 CD, or you can make a playlist which does the same thing. I find this the best way to listen to the score.
