Hi Bob
Sorry for the error there.
Dont know how I forgot to give the 3-D Film Archive its proper credit.
I’m really enjoying season one of The Abbott and Costello Show and looking forward to season two. 👍
John
cineescape,
Don't know where you heard that the 35mm prints were trashed…they weren’t.
They just weren’t handled with care as they were passed down from several owners.
Unfortunately when Kelloggs began sponsorship of this series, edits were made to the actual 35mm negatives…not copies...
cineescape,
The Adventures of Superman was scanned in standard definition, off of 35mm prints then transferred to tape in the 1980s. These taped copies were later used to create the DVD set.
The exception to this was The Stolen Costume episode which was taken from a well worn 16mm print.
I’d...

I’m not being negative at all, just realistic
As for all the other work Warner is doing, its good stuff and they are too be commended for it. However I’m not talking about all their other work, just this particular series.
To Warner’s credit as I stated before, they did not receive...
smithbrad,
Warner Bros. has owned this program almost 50 years and aside from scanning the 35mm masters to standard definition for TV syndication in the early 90’s for Nick At Nite, they have done nothing to further the cause for this popular series. The DVDs we got from Warner were from the...
Hi all,
Decades has the same prints that we have on the DVD set.
Warners has made no effort, nor will they, in releasing this show on Blu-ray. They are too cheap to undertake a restoration to HD or Blu-ray as popular as this show still is. What we currently have…standard definition 35mm...
Hi all,
As I mentioned before, I had the pleasure of meeting both Noel Neill and Jack Larson several times.
I asked Noel one time, why Lois didn’t recognize Superman as Clark when he was lying in bed in Panic In The Sky. She laughing told me, “I wanted to keep my job.”😉
John
Bob,
Been wanting the restored Abbott and Costello Show since it first became available last month. My wife has ordered it as a birthday gift for my 66th Birthday which is next week. Can’t wait to see it.
Thanks again.
John
RobertMG,
Warners really didn’t put much effort into this DVD set actually. It was generally done on the cheap.
Jack Larsen and Noel Neill did their commentary on this DVD for free because Warners refused to pay them. Can you believe it ??
Their love of the show was stronger than any monetary...
Bob,
I guess we will never know for sure then.
I respect your knowledge in this area.
All I was told was that Warner created this DVD using the same videotape transfer from 16mm fine grain elements used for syndication back in the late ‘80’s early 90’s.
John
Bob,
I was told by several people in the know ( not that you’re not 😉) that many of the 35mm masters, especially the B/W ones were too damaged to be used for the DVD set. 16mm fine grain masters transferred to tape were used instead.
IMHO the B/W episodes look far from 35mm pristine.
John
RobertMG,
With all the tapes that WPIX erased or tossed, you’d think that in that mass of videotape, there would be one or two of their kiddie shows saved. So much NY TV history lost. Same goes for WNEW and WOR.
Lucky you, standing in Officer Joe’s studio.
John
RobertMG,
That particular episode might have had a heavily damaged 35mm element which lead to a subpar 16mm print. I don’t know for sure. As I stated before, Warners was offered better prints from private collectors. How they got them I don’t know. These “collector prints”
might have been...
RobertMG,
The series was originally shot on 35mm film. Sometime in the late 80’s, early 90’s it was transferred from 16mm to videotape prior to its debut on the Nickelodeon channel.
I was told that many, if not all 35mm negatives were edited after Kelloggs took sponsorship, possibly for...
John,
I highly doubt Warners will do anything further with this series.
This was just a quick buck DVD release, using a video transfer from 30+ years ago of fine grain 16mm film.
Word has it that some of the original 35mm prints are too damaged to work with without a costly restoration.
John
RobertMG,
I met John Hamilton’s son (also named John) in August of 2014 at a Superman gathering in California. Jack Larson was also there and it was nice seeing the two of them reunite after 56 years.
John was very shy and never attended gatherings of this sort. He really had to be convinced...
Hi all,
I was lucky enough to meet Noel Neill and Jack Larson several times. They were the most down to earth people you could meet and loved doing the show.
I also met John Hamilton’s (Perry White) son and Bill Shayne’s (Inspector Henderson) daughter. Both equally as friendly.
John
Nelson,
I feel the b/w episodes were the best of the series. Although there are a few gems among the color episodes, most of them are more childish and just plain silly.
John
Robert,
I personally spoke to Jack Larsen several years ago and he told me that initially, he thought Reeves was killed. He later
changed his mind after further thought.
John
Bill,
We will never know for sure how George Reeves died. For many years one of his costars Jack Larson (Jimmy Olsen) believed he was killed, but later said that he believed George took his own life.
Most people said in the days leading up to his death, George was in an upbeat mood and...
rmw650,
Any airings of The Adventures Of Superman on TV, are time sped and edited. I prefer to watch the episodes at the proper speed and in their most complete form….on the DVD set.
John
John,
From what I was told, Warner Brothers was offered a better print of “The Stolen Costume” by several private collectors. WB refused the offers, not sure why.
