Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

In case anyone missed it I note that Classic Flix are to release S1 of the old ZIV show 'Lock-Up' this Spring. Not clear if it will only be available from them or will have wider distribution. I've only seen a couple of episodes & have to say it would be about 101st. on my list of black & white...

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

My understanding is that Timeless did consider 'The Gray Ghost' at one time & had traced some prints from Canada , this was about time of the Shout takover & I guess it got kicked into the long grass. 'Wichita Town' was another series they wanted to put out in the very early days & were close...

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

Just picked up 'Death Valley Days' S2 & note that it is on the Shout label, as were 'The Monroes' 'Custer' & 'The Loner' a few months back. S1 of 'Death Valley' was Timeless. So it looks like Timeless as a label has been completely swallowed by Shout & no longer exists.Something thsat was...

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

Back in the day I well remember how labour intensive it was to record shows on video. I was always a bit of a quality buff so had some high end equipment , used to always try to get a direct record and edit out the advert breaks as they went out. Copying later to remove them was OK but you...

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

Gary Just as I was coming to terms with no more B/W releases you've reminded me of all the great old series we will probably never get to see. Not to mention 50's Dragnet, Line-Up, OSS, Pursuers, Cannonball, Man Without a Gun, Richard Diamond, Gunslinger. etc.etc. If we were to see only a...

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

I agree, a splendid analysis Joe. Comparing 1954 with 1893 really puts it in perspective. You would have to be around 8 years old in 54' to actually remember first broadcasts of some of these old shows which means you are getting on for 70 now. Not a target market for DVD releases at all. When...

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

Joe An abysmal release, only contained 23 episodes despite the claim of being complete. Of the multitude of DVD sets I have bought, this was the absolute worst for quality, even had a TV logo in the corner,.made Alpha look stunning.! They actually re-released it & zoomed the picture to...

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

Paramount did release some VHS tapes of 'The Roy Rogers Show' years ago. As far as I know they were all from the last season & were good , uncut quality.I only have a couple of the Alpha discs of the show & they are - well Alpha quality. Some episodes are OK whilst others are trimmed, some...

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

I agree , the VCI 'Annie Oakley' was a real a quality release with some nice extras. My understanding is that it is now mostly public domain. VCI apparently sourced their prints from the daughter of Gail Davis who had copies of all the shows, so I think it is probably a one-off.

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

Well I had a very large tape collection back in the day, larger than most I imagine, which I augumented by swapping/buying with collectors worldwide , Australia, USA.etc. A lot of this has now been duplicated on disc but there is an awful lot more I now have thanks to DVD. In particular whole...

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

I have just pre-ordered 'The Rebel' with more than a hint of sadness as I suspect (other than anything from WBA) it could well be the last B/W release we see. Its a good series though so going out on a high. As far as WBA goes, probably the remaining 'Lawman' & I heard a rumour that 'Colt 45.'...

Thanks for the info Lou. Its a sad state of affairs though ,when b/w fans have to rely on Alpha for any releases.

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

May I also state my disappointment that Gary O/S will be winding down his posts to the forum. His predictions & analysis of the shows & market have always been spot on & its a big loss. This thread in particular, which Gary started, has proved an immensely interesting subject with varied...

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

The era of B/W TV has clearly come to an end, there might be a couple of twitches but it is effectively dead. I also have to agree with Frank that classic TV overall has hit a similar slowdown & going the way of B/W. A couple of years back I used to list all the shows of interest coming out &...

Just to lighten the gloom I see Season 2 of 'The Rifleman' is to be released in November.Except for Warners, probably, I don't see anybody releasing b/w series in 2015.

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

Gary is quite correct that the former president of Timeless was a fan of old TV westerns & wanted to get as many as possible out there for other fans to enjoy. Don't think he was a complete philanthropist though and obviously believed there was profit to be made, which presumably there was...

I note Timeless is re-releasing 'M Squad, apparently with extras of other crime shows in which Lee Marvin appeared. No word of better transfers so I imagine it is the same as the previous release. As has been stated on this thread many times, the black & white era of DVD releases is drying up...

Extras include a one hour documentary on Gail Davis, episode guide + photo galleries from her personal collection. This might indicate VCI have sourced the prints from her daughter...

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

VCI do generally PD material. They did Zane Grey Series 1 though which I think they would have to licence.. Haven't seen this so I don't know what the prints were like. Annie Oakley seems to be a series that has partially fallen into PD, hence all the Alpha releases , some of which I understand...

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

They have just re-released 'The Texan', whether or not they have adjusted the lighting I can't say, though I doubt it. They have put it out as 'The Complete Series' - however it is the same as the earlier release & no new episodes are included. Bit of a fraud really.

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

I first heard they were hoping to put this out a nearly two years back. Last information I had were one episode short. As Timeless seem to have drastically reduced their output of old shows I'm not sure this is still on the radar.Hope I'm wrong.

' The David Niven Show' - don't know much about this one, think it is an anthology show with Niven doing the introductions. Made by Four Star. UK release coming from Renown shortly.

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

Had a polite reply saying their old website was being incorporated into the Shout site & said they would pass on my suggestions to their...

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

Couldn't agree more Gary. What surprises me is the way it has all come to an almost dead stop rather than a gradual wind down. The demise of Timeless since the Shout takeover has more or less taken out the one company who could be relied on for a stream of releases of classic TV & presumably...

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

'Bilko' aka 'The Phil Silvers Show' aka 'You'll Never Get Rich' the complete series + extras is scheduled for UK release in July. Horrendous price but I'm sure it will drop. You can check it out on Amazon UK. I imagine a US release will be in the offing.
