The OP is not getting output from his surround backs, so stating that he wouldn't get 7.1 was irrelevant anyway, at least in the search to find the problem. Not to mention DDEX, and DTS-ES do not support 7.1 in the first place.

That is incorrect, the receiver will matrix the surround back channel with standard 5.1 tracks and just as well DTS Neo:6 and Dolby Pro Logic IIx matrix 6.1 from 2 channel sources.
