I believe every Stanley Kramer directed film from 1955 to 1973 (not sure about 71s "Bless the Beasts and the Children") has received a blu-ray release in the US, it is surprising that "The Defiant Ones", his most honored if not most popular film, never made it to blu....at least so far

My guess is that since Twilight Time or Kino (both of whom released several Kramer titles on blu-ray) never released "The Defiant Ones", then perhaps Criterion has the rights and have been sitting on it for some reason or another

I watched the Criterion Blu-ray of "In the Heat of the Night " in honor of Mr. Poitier. And why is "The Defiant Ones" the only major Stanley Kramer directed film NOT to have a US Blu-ray release ?

It's interesting that Widmark, along with Robert Ryan, excelled at playing horrible and often racist villains, yet in real life both men were said to be very kind and thoughtful and gentle men. I guess that's why they call it "acting"
