My 1st gen Apple TV 4K upgraded during the day yesterday (I saw the light flashing while I was watching football via my Roku Ultra). As mentioned by others, the Movies and TV apps no longer worked -- they each just pop up a message saying to use the Apple TV app. I moved those apps to a separate...
No, I am able to resume playback of shows while switching between our Apple TV device and the Apple TV app on at least some of our Roku devices. We have numerous Roku models, and I have not tried this on all of them, but I know it works with the Ultra (newer model that supports Dolby Vision)...
Yes, it can be annoying, but most TV series have played with no issues. Even DS9 played fine for the first 10 episodes, and appears to be back on track after a few episodes. Batman: The Animated Series season 1 was the worst, as once this happened it never corrected itself.
I have been getting other weirdness lately with my Apple TV 4K and iTunes library. I like to use the ATV app to view the TV series I've purchased, since the "Watch Next" menu item will bring up the next episode of the TV series. Well, yesterday with recently purchased Star Trek: Deep Space Nine...
I leave mine at 4K/60/SDR because when Dolby Vision is being passed through my Denon X3300W receiver the AVR will not send the on screen display (OSD) to the TV. So, I cannot see the volume setting on screen, or display information such as sound format, speaker outputs, etc. I deal with it for...
Roku does things in this similar strange manner, too. Not sure why some of these manufacturers make HDR10 and/or Dolby Vision setup so complicated. Sony's UHD players actually require you to manually turn Dolby Vision on/off. Ugh.
Your friend probably has poor video settings on the "apps" input for the display. With some adjusted settings, the picture quality would probably improve immensely.
I turned off sleep mode on my Apple TV 4K a long time ago. I was having issues getting it to wake up consistently and would have to hard boot the unit about once a week. Things have been much better without the device going into sleep mode.
A Roku 4K streaming box (Ultra or Premiere) running the Apple app will display 4K material on a 4K display. However, I have no idea if the Apple app running on a Roku TV will do the same.
They will offer the new model with different colored covers that attach magnetically, the unit will cost $500, and people will line up outside the Apple Store to buy one. ;)
I will occasionally encounter some flakey behavior with the Apple TV 4K, @TonyD . When that happens, a restart from the system menu almost always fixes the issue.
SInce your Samsung doesn't support Dolby Vision, you may want to consider a less expensive 4K streaming solution, such as the Roku Premiere 4K. I picked up one recently on sale for about $30, including the proper 4K HDMI cable.
I have been experiencing this with the TV Shows app ever since I bought the ATV4K a few years ago. After it hasn't been rebooted for a few days, when I try to access my library of purchased TV Shows, it will just sit there and spin. I have to press the "home" button, and then go to the settings...
I have been using universal remotes for many, many years -- one of my first was a Marantz RC2000, which was quite big and heavy. I just hate doing the "remote control shuffle" with a coffee table full of remotes.
The Harmony 665 is one of the best "bang for your buck" items you can get for your...
I use a Harmony 650 universal remote to control my entire home theater, including an ATV4K. You should be able to find one, or the newer 655, for $40 or so.
I use both types of devices quite a bit, and when I purchased the ATV4k a couple of years ago it was clearly a better device than the Roku Ultra I also owned. However, that was primarily because (1) iTunes content could only be viewed on an Apple device, and (2) the Roku Ultra had very buggy...
Roku doesn't support Dolby Vision, if that's important to you. I have one Apple TV 4K -- installed in the main home theater in our family room -- and Roku devices attached to the other four displays in our home, plus one in the main home theater (I had it already before getting the ATV4K)...
Well, that's one way for Apple to finally get 4K transfers of Disney products in iTunes. ;)
I am no fan of Di$ney as a company, but a combined Apple + Disney conglomerate wouldn't be good for home entertainment, IMO. There needs to be more competition -- not less.
The only thing I could think of is if the new processor helps with handling Dolby Vision material better on the box. With some DV films watched via iTunes, I will have audio sync issues -- but not with every film on that app encoded with DV. I do not have an issue with DV material via the...
Try a Harmony 650 universal remote control. I use one to operate my entire home theater, and all the OEM remotes are stored away with the batteries removed. You can find one for under $50 in U.S. dollars. Best money you'll ever spend on your setup.
As for whether the Apple TV 4K is worth its...
You would need two different Comcast services, with two routers, for this to work. My Comcast account is not tied to an email address -- I have an actual account number that is tied to my physical address and cable entrance.
I did go over my 1TB monthly limit once -- when I switched my online...
The Apple TV also works with Harmony universal remotes, so if you find the Apple remote cumbersome the Harmony is another option. Personally, I have never used the Apple remote -- it's stored with all my other OEM remote controls. The Apple TV works well with my Harmony 650 remote. I lose the...
I lose the on screen display from my Denon X3300W receiver when it's passing through Dolby Vision, too. It seems to be a common theme with Marantz and Denon, which share a lot of hardware and software. It's not a huge deal, but I do get used to having the volume display on my screen, as I cannot...
I have some weirdness with TV Shows on the ATV4K, as well. In my case, through the "TV Shows in iTunes" app the Game of Thrones seasons 1-7 that I own all show up, but if I go through the Apple TV app it only indicates that I own seasons 1,3,4 and 5. When we were re-watching the series, the...
That doesn't help those of us who do not own an iPhone (I'm a longtime Android phone owner). The remote's not a big deal for me, though, as I use my Harmony 650 universal remote to control my entire home theater, including the Apple TV 4K.
Yeah, that is BS, Johnny. An improper HDMI cable will cause issues with the 4K video & audio connection to your AVR or display, but it cannot have any affect on the WiFi signal.
