A few shots from The Theater By The Sea in Islamorada, during our recent trip to the Florida Keys. There were not many "photo friendly" exhibits, so I did the best I could with my Canon M50 mirrorless and EF-M 55-200mm lens.
From this morning's visit. This time I brought along the Canon M50 mirrorless body and EF-M 55-200mm lens. This is the lightest camera + lens combo I can ever remember taking to the zoo. It made for a nice, comfortable walk. The M50 is also much better at recording video than my two dSLRs, so I...
Another zoo visit this morning. I tried something a little different, using my new mirrorless Canon M50 and my EF 70-200L f/4 IS lens via the EF to EF-M adapter. Some of the exhibits are being renovated (red panda and tigers), and that along with the summer heat kept some of the animals in...
From this morning's visit.
The river otter exhibit has been expended since our last visit. You can now view the otters outside with no glass.
The new baby camel, only a month old, and the proud parents. I usually do not take photos of the camels, as the background is lousy, but I made an...
Some shots from Alligator Adventure in Myrtle Beach, SC last week. This complex is across the main road from our condo. We do not visit too often, but had a little extra time this trip.
...and yes, they do have alligators there, too. ;)
Thanks. It was pretty much impossible to capture the penguins swimming in the old penguinarium, which was built in the 1960's. Between the poor lighting, dirty/clouded glass, and a limited underwater viewing area, we had pretty much stopped even visiting the old exhibit. The lighting in the new...
The focus did look a little off on some of the shots you posted, Cameron, but I wasn't sure if that was just Flickr softening the photo or something else.
As for the glass, fortunately only a few exhibits require shooting through it at our zoo, and it's only an issue with the new lion exhibit...
Cameron,
It appears your lion exhibit is much more photographer-friendly than ours. The Detroit Zoo opened a new exhibit a couple of years ago, and the type of glass used makes it difficult to get a clear shot. I have no issues shooting through the glass in the other exhibits -- river otters...
We made our first visit to the new Penguinarium today. It is really an impressive facility, and it's drawing such a large crowd that the zoo hands out tickets with a time for entry to keep the traffic manageable. We got there when the zoo opened, so our time was right around then.
I wasn't sure...
A few from today. When we next visit, the new penguin exhibit should be open. We've been looking forward to that exhibit since it was announced, as the existing peguinarium was built in the 1960's and is very out of date.
One of the otters was having some fun
I was reading an article this...
The weather was mild last weekend, so we had a chance to make another zoo visit.
Yes, they really do box!

I may have been unsuccessful in capturing any gray wolf photos in Yellowstone last week, but I did get some nice views of the two at the new exhibit at our local zoo this morning. This is the first time I've had a good look at the black male since the exhibit opened in late June. The white...
Sam,
Enjoy Alaska. We were there last summer. I am looking forward to seeing some photos when you return. We just returned from a week in Yellowstone. I will post some photos once I can sift through all the shots from the 3 cameras I brought along for the trip. ;)
Nice shots, Sam. Having a clear view of a red panda is always a treat. The two at our zoo are usually hiding in the foliage of the trees. As much as we visit, we've seen them on the ground only three times, and only rarely get a clear view when they are in the trees.
There must be something...
The only reason I recalled the details without looking at the EXIF data is that I was adding it to a post on a photography forum yesterday discussing the teleconvertor. Usually, I have trouble remembering what I had for lunch the day before.
For the night heron shots, I think I was only at 520mm with the extender (could go as much as 560mm) because the framing was too tight. It would have been an f/8 aperture. The shot without the TC was at f/7.1 and 400mm, if I recall. The lighting probably changed a little between shots since the...
Mike,
This colony of night herons has been returning to nest at our Detroit Zoo for about 10 years, and they are very acclimated to people. They nest in the same tree every year -- there were over 40 nests this year. The birds pretty much move around at their own leisure, and this particular...
Mike,
We go to the zoo so much now that the animals have become willing models. Seriously, sometimes you get lucky with the lighting, and sometimes I just put the camera down because the lighting is so poor. This just happened to be the former. Fortunately, many of the exhibits at our...
We visited again this morning, as I wanted to try out my new Canon 1.4x III teleconvertor. It was quite hot and humid, though, so most of the animals were way back in the shade trying to stay cool. We didn't stay too long, but here are a few shots that I liked.
The female from the new gray...
The Detroit Zoo opened a beautiful new grey wolf exhibit a couple of weeks ago. Today was our first visit since the grand opening, although we have been watching the progress of it being built since last fall. The exhibit has two wolves -- a black male and a white female. We were able to get a...
Thanks, Cees. I really liked that pose by the pelicans, too. Upon reviewing the image, though, I wish I'd stopped down the lens more for additional depth of field to get the 2nd pelican in sharper focus.
Welcome to Home Theater Forum, Peter. This area is called "Other Diversions", which has...
Yes, Mike. It was a beautiful day to walk around the zoo, but tough for photography. We arrived when the zoo opened at 9am to beat the traffic and crowds, but the sun was still quite bright.
