I still think it will happen, and the TMP-DC is something of a test run, but we’re several years away from it. If we’re lucky, an announcement could be made for DS9’s 30th anniversary in 2023.
When (not if) DS9 is being remastered, it will not be in secret. We’ll know. And it’ll be like the Director’s Cut of TMP, premiering on P+ before any home video release.
Last night, we capped off our 18-month DS9 rewatch with What We Left Behind, the excellent documentary about the series. It's a testament to how vast the show was that 2 hours couldn't touch on everything (as Ira and Nana mentioned in the closing credits). There's been some talk about releasing...
And if I remember correctly, he becomes first officer after Riker leaves to captain The Titan. Which brings us to the first Picard novel, in which Worf has been made captain of the Enterprise.
I finished the series (again) last night, and IMO, it's the best Star Trek series. There's a solid through-line from the beginning to the end of the series (in most things) that just isn't there on the other shows. Also, I think this show showcases the Star Trek universe better than any other...
I just started the final sprint to the end of the series last night with Penumbra. With the exception of Gul Dukat's changes (which I was never feeling), the show is as good as it ever was at this point. These last 10 hours are among the best Star Trek has ever been.
Yeah, they obviously made a conscious choice in that regard, and it only gets worse from here. I thought Dukat was a better villain when his interests sometimes allied with the Federation and most of the time didn't, and so you never quite knew whether to trust him or not. From this point...
It's true that in real life, that happens far too often. But in film and television, it's unsatisfying and it makes the movie or show unsatisfying too, and that's a cardinal sin of filmmaking.
Tasha Yar's death was so unsatisfying that they went back and re-did it in the third season with...
I watched the season six finale, Tears of the Prophets, last night, and this one I like less every time I see it. It’s not very satisfying, and the writing isn’t up to par either. They knew Terry Farrell was leaving and needed a way to write her out, but they weren’t given much time (apparently...
Honestly, the Mirror Universe episodes ceased to be engaging once the Dominion War started. And I'd add that includes the Mirror episodes of Enterprise and Discovery. We've seen quite enough of the Mirror Universe. I don't need to see it anymore.
Last night I watched season 6's penultimate...
I watched Profit and Lace last night, which is not regarded as a great episode, although I don't think it's as bad as everyone says (although the Quark in drag stuff is abysmal).
But what really struck me is that this episode - which is as much a straight-up comedy as Star Trek has ever done -...
I watched In the Pale Moonlight and His Way this week, both very good episodes. Moonlight routinely comes up on fan favorite lists, and it’s great. It’s a very dark episode and watching Sisko’s reaction to events is enthralling. I love His Way for the introduction of Vic, who is one of the best...
Change of Heart was a really good episode, with a great script. Worf and Dax were a great couple, and the show played them together well. A couple of interesting things: I commented that while they were, of course, on a set in this episode, the jungle they created looked very convincing. I...
Watched Honor Among Thieves last night, which is a very good O'Brien episode, and typically, one that leaves him with lasting scars. Nick Tate is great as Bilby too. After all these annual "torture O'Brien" episodes, it's no wonder he went back to Earth to teach at Starfleet.
Finished through Far Beyond The Stars last night, and that one remains one of the best episodes in the entire franchise. (If I had one complaint, some of the act breaks are a bit abrupt, but that's a minor thing.) It might be Avery Brooks' best performance in the series. It'd be a major...
I watched the opening six episodes of Season 6 last night, and there probably was not a finer moment in the show's history. These episodes showed the consequences of the world the show created, and the occupation of the station is probably the darkest period the show ever had. These episodes...
No, no, don’t stop there. Seriously, jump ahead to The Way of the Warrior. She will probably be thrilled to see Worf from TNG, and the strong effect he has on the show. Then, it’s The Visitor, which is one of the series’ best. I’d choose one or two beyond that, and if that doesn’t work, then...
That's how I introduced TNG and DS9 to my wife about 13-14 years ago. Now she's a huge fan, and DS9 is her favorite.
If you could show your wife all the episodes that make up the mythology and get to the serialized portion of the show, I bet she'd be hooked.
I just re-started DS9 last night after a month or so away. I started season 6, which begins with the great opener A Time To Stand. We're deep into the Dominion storyline now, and the season 5 finale and this opener are tremendous. The show was arguably never better than the first half dozen...
I'm sure many of you saw this tweet from Michael Dorn:
TrekMovie has said it confirmed that this will not be for any Paramount+ show, nor will it be the 2023 movie that's scheduled. It could be a video game, although Dorn has already contributed to STO (Star Trek Online). There is also the...
The new teaser for the second season of Picard has a very curious piece on display, and it's from Deep Space Nine.
"Along with the familiar elements from The Next Generation is a very, very curious prop, recreated from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s sixth season: the stone tablet foretelling of...
Finished Season 5 last night, with Call To Arms, which is one of the best season finales of any series. It ratchets up the tension, pays it off with an attack on the station, and then creates a massive, massive cliffhanger that will inform the first quarter of the next season. Sharp writing too...
I'm halfway through season 5, and this is as strong a group of episodes as the show ever had: For The Uniform, In Purgatory's Shadow, By Inferno's Light, Doctor Bashir I Presume. In fact, Purgatory/Inferno may be my favorite episodes of the series. (Yes, the ending strains credibility a bit -...
I will just say that I don't get - and have never gotten - the hate for Let He Who Is Without Sin. I always thought it was a fun episode, even if the villains were a bit silly -- kind of an 80s mom group complaining about rock lyrics. I will also grant that Worf is a bit out of character. Those...
Last night I watched Trials and Tribble-ations, and I don't think there has ever been a more well-done homage to the original series. Far from shying away from TOS' design aesthetics (cough cough Discovery), DS9 embraced them. I enjoyed how the two time periods had very different looks, just as...
Continuing my DS9 re-watch, this week I started season 5, which is one of my favorite seasons. Last night I saw Looking For Par'Mach In All The Wrong Places, which is a sequel of sorts to season 3's The House of Quark (a delightful episode), but also a way to set up the Worf-Dax relationship and...
Let’s hope CBS knows this. As Mike Okuda and others have said, key people at CBS want this to happen, but the decision hasn’t been made.
DS9 in HD is my holy grail.
