I've discussed with Kevin Miller, and decided, that since it requires a full re-set to allow him to tackle the beast next time he visits.
As to Unforgiven, I have doubts that it can ever look proper on any device.
I believe the source of the VHS master, c. 1983-84. was a low-con print, struck from the faded 35/4 duplicate printing negative, used for the theatrical re-issue.
I have no problem with proper discussions. Color was derived from a combination of original 1958 35mm dye transfer prints, original costumes and other color samples, as well as input from multiple people on the Hitchcock production team, inclusive of Henry Bumstead and Peggy Robertson.
Major useable difference between 5 & 9 is the glass, which aside from a more highly resolved image, allows a bit more illumination.
That noted, Unforgiven did not look proper on the 9.
Many of the early discs were problematic, especially in projection. Consumers are always forced to play catch-up. A bit akin to getting a new phone every six months.
While I'm seeing a slightly improved image, it's nothing that most viewers would notice.
IMHO, the problem is in the application of HDR to the master, and not your projector.
A modern 4k re-master would be recommended, as this was Very early, as in 2016.
I’m awaiting the new firmware update later this month. The updates - same situation with Sony - must be loaded from a PC to a thumb drive.
I’m a Mac user, which makes things a bit more difficult.
Wondering why updates can run through wi-fi? Possible errors?
Possibly the members who are professional calibrators might give suggestion for others around the country, and in other territories.
I presume they know one another, have an annual conference in the Caribbean or South Pacific. And a secret handshake.
I can never say enough positive things about working with a top calibration artist. I thought Mr. Miller was satisfied.
Yesterday evening he texted and asked that I warm up the projector and stand by. Ten minutes later, he had me to go to the menu, and check a setting, specific to HDR, color...
For the record, I have no accommodation arrangement with JVC. Some manufacturers are pleased to place gear, at a nice discount, with certain folks that might be helpful to them. I did not find that to be the case with JVC.
Too rich for my blood also, but a necessity for properly reviewing here at HTF. May I suggest that each reviewer is issued one, akin to an M-1 Garand. No drill sergeants.
Appreciated, Michael,
You should make your location known to readers, as having any of this gear with proper calibration is a waste of funds - and enjoyment.
Everyone who invests in home theater gear should consider calibration.
I've been complaining, since HDR appeared as a technology linked to 4k UHD, that projectors don't play particularly nicely with that tech.
My former projector, a 4k Sony, does a magnificent job with HD and also with 4k, except when imagery gets very dark. It's a wonderfully reliable piece of...
