Blu-ray Review Song of Norway Blu-ray Review

Yes yes! Although shot in 35mm, this followup to NORWAY was just as visually gorgeous. It put an end to Andrew L. Stone's directing career, and is even goofier than NORWAY. At least it has the charming Mary Costa, who signed my DVD of Disney's SLEEPING BEAUTY (she voiced Princess Aurora).

Blu-ray Review Song of Norway Blu-ray Review

I think you mean The Great Waltz. It's a hoot, like Norway, and is on my wish list. TCM occasionally shows a VHS-quality print, but I don't think it has ever made it to home video. Trivia: Waltz's Mary Costa was also the voice of Princess Aurora for Disney's SLEEPING BEAUTY.

Blu-ray Review Song of Norway Blu-ray Review

If NORWAY is doing well, I hope somehow the word gets to George Feltenstein, so that Stone's THE GREAT WALTZ, which I believe never even made it to VHS, can be considered for release on Blu (or at least, DVD). The version that pops up occasionally on TCM could use some remastering.

Blu-ray Review Song of Norway Blu-ray Review

Yes, the movie is a mess, but having watched it tonight for the first time all the way through since its original 70mm engagements, I found it as entertaining as I remembered -- the music, the beautiful scenery, the goofball choreography, the melodramatic script, the inept direction and editing...

Blu-ray Review Song of Norway Blu-ray Review

Here is a trailer from some sort of anniversary showing of THE GREAT WALTZ, which gives you a good idea of both its lavishness and its goofiness. By the way, I met lead actress Mary Costa when she was on the National Council for the Arts, and she autographed my copy of Disney's SLEEPING BEAUTY...

Blu-ray Review Song of Norway Blu-ray Review

Stone's THE GREAT WALTZ at least shows up on occasion on TCM, looking like it was sourced from a letterboxed VHS. Like SONG OF NORWAY, its settings looked gorgeous during its one-week run in theaters (yes, I actually saw in in a theater), and I wish Warner Archive would give it a shot. In some...
